Thanksgiving
For Pathways, November is our opportunity to pause and appreciate the support and resources given by many so that our students can believe and achieve.  We are grateful for families, teachers, counselors, mentors, employers, and many more.  We express our thankfulness at luncheons held at every Pathways school.

With our gratitude, we send you warm wishes for a great Thanksgiving!

Senior Receives Food Handling Certificate
Kemari Greene, a senior at Crossland Re-Entry, received her ServSafe Certification last year and is now employed at Popeye's restaurant. Crossland has a Culinary Arts Program which includes preparing students to take the ServSafe exam.

ServSafe is a food and beverage safety training and certificate program administered by the National Restaurant Association. The program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and the Conference for Food Protection.

After graduation, Kemari plans to pursue further training and a career in culinary arts.

Caring for homeless pets
Devan on the job with a canine client.
Devan Martin, a junior at Pathways-Anne Arundel, is an enthusiastic volunteer with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Anne Arundel County.  The SPCA takes in animals that have been given up by their owners and cares for them until they find new homes. Devan completed orientation and training in October.  Now, with the support of Pathways staff, he spends one day each week at the shelter helping to socialize and walk the dogs and grooming the cats.

Language arts gets some culture
Jamaal Collier, "Mr. Root"
Last month hip hop and rap artist Jamaal Collier was the resident artist at Pathways-Northwood for four days.  Known as "Mr. Root", Jamaal used his dynamic stage presence, rapping, and vocal percussion to inspire students and open them to the world of hip hop culture, rhythmic communication, and poetry.  His residency started with an interactive performance which powerfully demonstrated that hip hop is a culture with a story to tell in all its elements.  The residency continued with a series of exciting workshops in which students tried creating beats and wrote-and performed--their own rap verse.  The residency is part of our Alternative Therapies program, in which students explore a variety of avenues to learn about themselves and their world and to express what they are discovering.

Spirit Rally
Our Spirit Rally took a creative turn when the rally's lead presentation group was unexpectedly unable to come.  Undaunted, "The Pathways Pep Squad" aka our team from the Kennedy House (pictured above)  took a road trip to all schools to check out the students' "Believe and Achieve" banners and award students for great first quarter attendance!

One of the colorful banners!
