Senator Ed Reilly!
After staff member Jeri Gallagher wrote to her legislator concerning the budget affecting our school, State Senator Ed Reilly took the time to visit Pathways-Anne Arundel and learn first-hand about Pathways and other nonpublic schools.

Here he is pictured with Principal Cindy Sumner, staff member Zoe Parkinson, and an Anne Arundel student.

Our Seniors Shine!
The Pathways Schools will graduate 28 proud seniors this year, marking their success at six ceremonies.  Seniors at Pathways-DuVal Re-Entry and Pathways-Crossland Re-Entry walked proudly with their high school class at graduations at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro at the end of May.  In addition, we will hold ceremonies for our individual programs at Northwood Church, Luther Rice Memorial Church, and Woods Memorial Church later this month.

Here are some senior snapshots for you:

Aaron, Pathways-Crossland Re-Entry. A talented musician, Aaron plays drums in the worship band in his church, where he is an active member.  Aaron sees music as important for young people and hopes to apply his interest to his career path.

Anthony, Pathways-Edgewood Anthony is considering a career in theater and dance.  He auditioned for a part in a traveling performers company with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission/Parks and Recreation.  This company performs at summer camps and its positions are pre-professional and paid.  He started rehearsals in May, three days a week at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland.

Marylin, Pathways-Edgewood. An exceptional honor roll student, Marylin has two part-time jobs, working more than 20 hours each week while maintaining her studies. She plans to attend Prince George's Community College with the goal of transferring to the University of Maryland, where she hopes to enter the field of veterinary medicine.

Oscar, Pathways-DuVal Re-Entry. Oscar came to Pathways as a middle-schooler at Pathways-Hyattsville and successfully transitioned to Pathways-DuVal Re-Entry. He was hired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission as a camp counselor for the summer. He plans to attend Prince George's Community College in fall.

Stephon, Pathways-Northwood. Two-time winner of the annual student achievement award, Stephon participated in therapeutic horseback riding, HoopEd basketball and several arts-in-education projects. This year, he was part of the new KP Scholars program. Impressed with Stephon's enthusiasm and involvement, the staff of KP Scholars selected him to have a paid internship, where he learned tasks related to office management. Stephon has an interest in culinary arts and will be pursuing employment and training.

Wendie, Pathways-Springville. Wendie is an honor roll student and actively involved in her school, serving on the Student Government Association. A budding entrepreneur, she participated in the Young Entrepreneurship Program for two consecutive years. She designs jewelry and sells her creations through her own company, "Kylee's Gems", for which she continues to develop her business plan. She plans to attend TESST College of Technology in its medical assistant program.

Cardin Scholar Wins Again

Brenna McBride, a senior at Pathways-Anne Arundel, was one of only 72 students from all Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities (MANSEF) schools to receive a Cardin Scholarship this year. These competitive scholarships are awarded to students who "exemplify perseverance in the face of adversity and embody the spirit that everyone can succeed with hard work and support." Brenna is already pursuing an Associate's Degree at Anne Arundel Community College, and received a Cardin Scholarship last year for that purpose.  Her award this year will support her continuing success.  In addition to her studies, Brenna works part-time, clearly exhibiting the work ethic and positive attitude that the Cardin Scholarships promote. The scholarship fund was established in memory of Michael Cardin, son of U.S. Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland and his wife Myrna, a former MANSEF executive director. The funds are available to assist students enrolling in special training programs or for pursuit of vocational, trade, or college education.
