Earlier this year, Hazel Hughes, a ninth-grader at Pathways-Crossland Re-Entry, received the state-wide Arts for Learning Student Leadership Award from the Maryland affiliate of Young Audiences/Arts for Learning, the nation's largest arts-in-education network.  Hazel was recognized at the Art Show.

Fourth Annual Student Art Show

On March 25 the gallery room at Busboys & Poets in Hyattsville was once again the showcase for an outpouring of student creativity and artistic expression.  This year, the event was as remarkable for the poise and articulateness of our students as for for the talent on display.  Many of the young artists of The Pathways Schools had come to support their school and see their work proudly exhibited.  They

walked among the crowd exchanging greetings and comments, or in one case, sat intently sketching drawings when asked by impressed onlookers. Jayron later spoke to the crowd during the ceremony, noting that his art flows from "real life" and his imagination, and that it is a process, requiring patience as well as confidence.  He thanked his teachers and Pathways staff for their encouragement and support.

recognize the many individuals and organizations who partner with us to build and sustain the educational and therapeutic programs in which our students thrive.  All are deserving of gratitude.  Each year we select one individual who has been outstanding in dedication and passion for their work with our students.   This year the Community Partner of the Year Award went to teaching artist Carien Quiroga who enabled the students to create a stunning mosaic illustrating their visions of success and what inspires them to climb toward it.

Pathways Artists Shine!
Jayron proudly displayed his work at the Art Show and shared the story behind each one as admirers stopped to speak with him.

Jayron wrote,
"My art expresses freedom in meaning and religion, giving the viewer a joyful feeling with every detail....I'm an artist who works from imagination and real life.  To me art is never finished so I believe all art work should continue to improve. 'Anyone can draw.' It takes confidence and patience.   Just take a risk and use mistakes as a path to improvement."
