Many thanks
to Wheaton-Silver Spring Kiwanis and  Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church for their generous donations of food and gift cards so that several Pathways families were able to enjoy Thanksgiving festivities.  Our former CEO, Dr. Helen Williams, is the Past President of the Wheaton-Silver Spring Kiwanis Club. Bright, Beautiful, and Inviting

Pathways-Northwood wanted a way for each student to take pride in and to feel a part of the beautiful site that is the program's new home. The site is designed to promote learning in a therapeutic environment, with classrooms, therapy rooms, computer lab, and recreational space. But it needed an artistic touch, a way for each student to express themselves and create a welcoming atmosphere. This was the goal of an arts-in-education residency with muralist David Cunningham. The residency, which was supported by the Maryland State Arts Council, resulted in a project to create a mural with the theme "creating paths to success".

Laurie Mical, Principal of Pathways-Northwood, wrote,

In process

"Initially, David had each student draw a representation of his or her idea of success. These ideas were blended and a draft creation was made. Through the use of symbolism and a variety of art strokes, the mural came alive through their fingertips. "

The mural was unveiled at Northwood's Thanksgiving celebration, to admiration and approval. Ms. Mical went on to comment, "My dream for the mural was for each student arriving in the morning to see [it], which captures a piece of his or her spirit and thoughts toward the future. That connection helps the students feel they belong here the moment they step through the door."

Therapeutic Horseback Riding

This program has been a part of the experience of Pathways students from nearly the beginning of our school in 1982. Students from each site spend several weeks being instructed on how to care for and ride horses. This learning experience has benefits far beyond the acquisition of a skill. This year, at the closing demonstration during which students from Pathways Springville and Anne Arundel showed what they had learned, trainer and coordinator Nicky Beveridge said, "These riders have learned so much...They have tackled various difficult horsemanship skills. All have exhibited terrific perseverance, high motivation for learning, the ability to overcome fear, respect for all who have worked with them, and tremendous patience with themselves, their horses, and each other."
HoopEd

The fun, intense, and active basketball program that uses the game to teach life skills is now in its 18th year at Pathways. HoopEd is open to all students regardless of skill or experience, but those who participate must commit to coming every session and finishing the program. Following fast-paced and challenging drills and scrimmages, the coaches sit down with the students to review the session, give feedback, and converse with the players about what they are learning in leadership, cooperation, patience, respect, and teamwork.
