Third Annual Student Art Show

On April 30 the gallery room at Busboys & Poets in Hyattsville was once again the showcase for an outpouring of student creativity and artistic expression.  The room was filled with artwork and the guests who had come to admire it and give their support to the students of The Pathways Schools.

These young artists are able to shine because they have many who enable them to learn and let their creativity blossom: family members, Pathways staff, Board members, businesses and agencies who employ or provide internships for our students, teaching artists who carry out residencies at our schools, and many others.  They encourage the students to stay the course, complete their education, and fulfill their potential, whether that is creating art, starting a business, or embarking on a career.  These mentors and friends are Pathways' "Partners in Education", and at the Art Show, we honor and recognize them.  One is chosen to receive the Community Partner of the Year award, but all receive the gratitude and appreciation of Pathways staff and students.

Young Entrepreneurship Luncheon
Maryland State Delegates Alonzo Washington (left) and Jolene Ivey (right) present the Citation from the Maryland State Assembly to a student at the YEP Luncheon in Greenbelt
In the last issue of The Pathfinder we highlighted the Young Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) which takes students through a comprehensive, step by step training program in opening and operating a business.  Its success at The Pathways Schools has impressed many.  The annual YEP concluding luncheon held at the Greenbelt Hilton Garden Inn this year included a special ceremony in which the students who completed the YEP program were each awarded a citation from the Maryland General Assembly. The award recognized them for "overcoming many obstacles and challenges...and achieving incredible accomplishments" in their community. The citations were presented by Maryland State Delegates Alonzo Washington and Jolene Ivey. Judith Davis from the Greenbelt City Council and Greenbelt Mayor Emmett Jordan along with an array of business owners and organizations from Prince George's County were also in attendance.
