Fragrance in the Landscape

Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn'

When planning a landscape the intent is often to provide interest throughout the property by use of plant material with diverse sizes, textures, & bloom times. One plant quality that is often overlooked is fragrance. This winter Cedar Run Landscapes would like to highlight special plants that provide fragrance in the landscape. Our first choice is within the Viburnum genus as many within this genus are extremely fragrant. The Deciduous shrub, Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn', provides spring interest with heavily scented small clusters of rosy-pink blooms in March-April.

Reaching 8-10' high and spreading 4-6', this hybrid shrub (cross between V. farreri and V. grandiflorum) has an upright narrow habit with multi-stemmed trunk. Spring leaves emerge with tints of bronze after flowering. Mature summer foliage becomes a deep green. The foliage provides attractive fall color with shades of burgundy-red. Providing seasonal interest, use this viburnum as a specimen and consider placing where flower and fragrance can be enjoyed. It may also be grown as a screen or hedge within the landscape.
