2013 Disability Policy Seminar
Every day millions of Americans with intellectual and developmental disabilities are impacted by the public policy decisions - big and small -- made by their representatives in Congress. And each year, hundreds of advocates attend the Disability Policy Seminar in Washington, D.C. to learn more about and discuss the hottest topics in disability public policy. This seminar is an opportunity to advance the grassroots movement for people with I/DD and make sure your elected officials know what's important to you. Two days of informative in-depth sessions from disability policy experts and opportunities to network with others from your state will culminate in a third day starting off with breakfast on Capitol Hill before you personally meet with your elected representatives and their staffs.
*Washington, D.C.

Need a TTY?
In the past, persons who are Deaf communicated on the telephone by typing on a TTY (teletypewriter). Now most use videophone or texting devices. TTYs are becoming obsolete, but there might be a rare occasion for a business or individual to own one. Several have been donated to my office. Please contact me if you would like to have one at no cost. Melissa Bell, Deafness Resource Specialist, mbell@c-s-d.org, 903-534-1222. |
Schools Must Provide Students with Disabilities Equal Access to Extracurricular Sports
The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has issued guidance on the legal responsibilities of school districts to provide equal access to extracurricular athletic activities to students with disabilities. The letter urges school districts to work with community organizations to increase athletic opportunities, and provides examples of types of reasonable accommodations schools may need to make. Students with disabilities have the right, under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, to an equal opportunity to participate in their schools' extracurricular activities.
