Medicare Open Enrollment

The annual open enrollment for Medicare will be held October 15 through December 7.  People with Medicare get a full seven weeks to compare plans and make decisions so that they will have new benefit information and membership cards in hand when their new coverage begins January 1, 2013.  The open enrollment period is the ONLY time that changes can be made to Medicare plans.  For more information, please call East Texas Aging & Disability Resource Center at 1-877-237-2268 or East Texas Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-442-8845.

CMS Medicare Open Enrollment Consumer Toolkit

Each year Medicare beneficiaries are bombarded with information during the Medicare Open Enrollment period (which runs from October 15 to December 7).  Unfortunately every year unscrupulous insurance agents and companies take advantage of beneficiary confusion during this Open Enrollment season.  As Medicare Advantage (MA) and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) market their 2013 products, CMS wants to make sure that the agents and brokers working on behalf of these plans are following Medicare's laws and guidelines.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) created a set of education and outreach materials in the attached toolkit that can be used to help surveillance and enforcement efforts.

Please click here to access the  "Agent in My Home" Fact Sheet: This consumer fact sheet explains how agents/brokers should conduct themselves when meeting with people with Medicare in their homes, and applies year-round.

FREE ASSERTIVENESS WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

How do I let the school know how I feel without being aggressive?  Are my emotions preventing me from effectively communicating? Have I expressed my thoughts and feelings in a direct, honest and open manner? Am I being heard? Am I listening? In December, The PATH Project presents Assertiveness Training. Parents of children with disabilities need to behave assertively in order to secure a free appropriate education for their children.  In this workshop, you will learn to behave assertively in order to meet and express your child's needs, as well as respect and communicate with others effectively.

All workshops are free of charge.  Space is limited and registration is required to attend the December 6 workshop in Tyler, TX.   To register, please contact:
