NAHASDA REAUTHORIZATION ACTION NEEDED
HR 4329, a bill to reauthorize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act that was introduced by Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) earlier this year, was favorably discharged from the Financial Services Committee on July 31, 2014. The bill now awaits consideration by the full House of Representative.See how you can help move this important bill forward in the Governmental Affairs News section below.

2014 LEGAL SYMPOSIUM CANCELLED
NAIHC will not be holding the Legal Symposium in December of this year. This is a one-time occurrence, and we look forward to continuing this popular event in 2015. We have spoken extensively for the last year and a half about the many changes that have occurred in funding, both with HUD and outside sources. In order to effectively address this transition, we have had to consider innovations to our core programs.

Transformation cannot be implemented without a strategy and goals, however. In April of this year we conducted a membership survey, and we received good, candid feedback that we will use in redefining our work, making sure that it remains most effective for you, our members. To this end, we needed some time to develop your suggestions and ideas. This short break from the Legal Symposium will give us this time, so that we can enter 2015 with training and advocacy programs that are more relevant than ever to your needs.

We appreciate your understanding as we innovate to meet the needs of Indian housing. Should you have any questions or comments, please contact executive director David Sanborn at [email protected].

NEW EASTERN WOODLANDS ADMINISTRATOR
HUD announced that Mark Butterfield (Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska) is the ONAP Eastern Woodlands region's new Administrator. With many years of professional experience in Native American Housing, he was most recently the Executive Director of the Ho-Chunk Housing and Community Development Agency in Tomah, WI. In addition to having participated on the HUD Negotiated Rulemaking Committee, he has been a member of NAIHC's Board of Directors, representing Region 2, for the past four years.

ZUNI PROGRAM FEATURED IN RURAL VOICES
The Pueblo of Zuni Housing Authority was chosen to be featured in the upcoming issue of Rural Voices, a publication of the Housing Assistance Council (HAC). With the success of their participation in the Self-Help program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Rural Development division, the program was a perfect fit for that publication's audience.
