Just what is a campaign, anyhow?
According to google, campaign is defined as:

It is probably pretty obvious that an email newsletter from the Salina Area United Way isn't referring to the military definition of campaign.  However, it might not be as obvious to you that in our office we don't like to refer to campaign in terms of money.  For many, many years the United Way has been known for its
CAMPAIGN.  That is: its annual fundraising drive.  Don't get me wrong, that is an essential part of our work, but what is more important is that we all recognize and get on board with the TRUE meaning of the verb campaign: (and it is worth repeating here) work in an organized and active way, typically a political or social one.

As I was taught here in our very own Salina schools, the best way to gain an understanding of something is to break it down into  smaller parts...so let's do that!
  • WORK: this is an activity that involves mental or physical effort to achieve a result.  To us this means that we have to be involved, we have to participate, and is the result of exertion.
  • ORGANIZED: something that is arranged in a systematic way, especially on a large scale.  To be successful we must gather and order things so that they make sense to all who are involved.
  • ACTIVE: engaging and DOING things, rather than simply showing support.
As you can see, none of the above refers to money.  Indeed, each piece of the definition of campaign can require money, but unless and until we all are engaged in active, organized work...there is no need for fundraising!  We need your help!  Give, but please, also advocate and volunteer!  With your help, we are STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY!

Thank you!
What a great Kick-Off event! Thank you for helping making our first community-wide kick-off a smashing success!

So many people in our community came together to help put this event on. We had volunteers helping with the games, the refreshments, setting up and taking down all the signs and activities and equipment. Many more helped get the word out by sharing the event on Facebook or by good, old fashioned word of mouth, and the results were outstanding.

We were fortunate to have the support of Mowrey Clinic as a community sponsor, as well as game and activity sponsorships from Long McArthur, Angels Home Health Care, Capitol Federal Savings, Waddell & Reed, Assurance Partners, McDonald's of Salina, Bennington State Bank and Blue Skye Brewery & Eats.

We had over 300 people join us in the park on a beautiful day to have fun, play games and hear about how the Salina Area United Way is helping to Strengthen Our Community.

A highlight of the day was
Bubba Dowling's Strong Man Show, which included the tearing in half of numerous phone books, and the smashing of many many bricks.

We can't say it enough. To each of you, and to our whole community, thank you!

You are what helps  make #SalinaStrong!
