#GivingTuesday
Mayor Aaron K. Householter proclaimed Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at #GivingTuesday here in Salina! The proclamation was read and signed, and many local non-profits, businesses, and community members participated in media campaigns to make this day a success. Make the Last Month of 2014 a Healthy One!
New Years' Resolutions are great... but every day can be seen as a new beginning, a fresh start, or a blank page. Each night when you go to sleep your mind and body reset. Each morning you wake up, and while external factors may affect lots of things in your life, you to get to make one very important choice all on your own: Are you going to face the day with a negative or a positive attitude? Choose.

One of United Way's priority areas is Health. Making sure people abstain from risky behaviors and have access to adequate medical care, starting before birth. Advancing the common good is a great thing, but it starts with one person at a time. We all have to take steps to make sure we are living the healthiest lives we can in order to properly care for each other.

One of the simplest steps we can take to ensure overall good health is to make the choice to be positive. Troubles may not melt away, but approaching them in a positive way will help you see light at the end of the tunnel. Positivity doesn't stop there! Many people wait until January 1st and resolve to begin a regular exercise routine, focus on their mental health, start eating healthier, call old friends, or quit smoking/drinking/insertbadhabithere. Why not make a positive change today? Just because it isn't the New Year yet doesn't mean we can't begin to make positive changes. Achieving good health isn't a trial run, a self-help book, or anything else. It is a daily challenge that we face, and it starts with how you choose to face it.
End-of-Year Giving Draws Tax Benefits
As the year winds down, you may be looking at increasing your donations to your favorite charitable organizations. There are several benefits to end-of-year giving you should know about:
  • A contribution to a qualified charity is deductible in the year in which it is paid
  • Most, but not all, charitable organizations qualify for a charitable contribution deduction.
  • A gift to a qualified charitable organization may entitle you to a charitable contribution deduction against your income tax if you itemize deductions.

Here are a few websites that are good to browse if you are looking to learn more about charitable giving and tax deductions.

As always, we thank you for thinking of Salina Area United Way!
