Literacy Kit Pilot Program

One of the goals of our community impact program, Partners In Early Childhood Education (PIECE), is to increase parental engagement in families with children ages 0-5. One way this happens is by giving reading kits to children ages 1-5 at Salina's free summer lunch program hosted by USD 305. Piggy-backing on this idea, SAUW wanted to ensure school-age children have opportunities to read and grow during the summer, thus helping to ensure the "summer slide" isn't so steep. This winter, Executive Director Amanda Michaelis met with USD 305 Superintendent Bill Hall and several Principals and literacy coaches who were interested in running a school-age literacy kit pilot program. Once a few schools got on board, Amanda approached local businesses that have expressed interest in providing meaningful service opportunities to their employees. Several employers then agreed to allow employees to volunteer during work hours to help assemble the literacy kits. With this collaborative approach, many community organizations are coming together to benefit both school-aged children and those entering Kindergarten the coming school year... click here to continue reading.
Income Priority: Circles of the Heartland
Last week SAUW got to spend time with one of our funded programs, Consumer Credit Counseling Services' Circles of the Heartland. This program is funded under the United Way priority of Income. Circles works with local families to bridge the gap and help them come out of poverty. At their March 27 meeting, Circle Leaders, future Circle Leaders, and the Circles Guiding Coalition all gathered for dinner and then to either meet with the Guiding Coalition or attend the Getting Ahead financial literacy classes. While the adults learned, the children broke off into groups to play games, relax, and socialize. Currently there are 9 Circle Leaders and 11 potential Circle Leaders. Circles Program Coordinator Shelly Martin is happy to bring transformation to the Salina community and excited at how quickly the program is growing. Other SAUW affiliated organizations that have Income-related programming include: Ashby House, Catholic Charities, Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, & Kansas Legal Services.
