This year, the United Way Worldwide Day of Action is June 21. The focus is on education; specifically reading. United Way Worldwide says, "Education is the cornerstone of individual and community success. In America, more than 1.2 million children drop out of high school annually creating an education crisis costing billions of dollars. At United Way Day of Action 2011 we launched a three-year goal to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to help improve the academic success of young people across America. Join us!" While people across the world are volunteering, SAUW will be participating in their own day of action project. We are recruiting volunteers across all ages and backgrounds to volunteer a half hour of their time to read to the youth that attend the Salina Free Summer Meal Program. We will have volunteers at all eight locations on the Day of Action, June 21. So why not join? Take the pledge here to become a volunteer reader, tutor, or mentor to a child.
