Fall/2012
Back to School Welcome
Director, Paula Kinney From Our Head of School

I can't believe that the holidays are already upon us. We have had a great start of the year and it only gets better. The students are beginning to take so much pride in their learning and are realizing that they truly are gifted in so many different ways. In addition, we have a great committed staff and wonderful supportive families.

Park Academy continues to flourish! We have reached our capacity of 52 students and now have a waiting list for the Upper School. The word is out: "Park Academy is dedicated to changing the lives of students impacted by learning challenges." We aim to reach as many students who need us, regardless of socio-economic status. In addition, we want to provide the best professional development opportunities to our staff so they are able to stay current with the latest technology and research that keep our teachers intellectually prepared and nourished in order to guide and challenge students to learn at their highest level.

It costs a little over $19,000 to educate each student. Our current budget does not cover nearly the amount needed to provide sufficient financial assistance or professional development costs. As you think about making your annual contributions, please consider Park Academy one of your highest priorities. May all of you receive peace, health and happiness throughout the New Year.

Sincerely,

Paula Kinney, Ed.D
Head of School

OMSI Student Science Partnership

In the Lab: Students in Lower School Cohort B

Students sure are having fun at the OMSI science labs this year! Once a month students visit OMSI to participate in the OMSI Student Science Partnership offered for Park Academy students. This gives our students the opportunity to participate in a variety of labs throughout the year, such as From Pond Scum to Salmon Science, What is a Watershed, Climate & Carbon, Squid Dissection, Science of Sound, and the Nature of Matter. Students couldn't be more excited about their time spent at OMSI, and teachers are equally appreciative of the valuable educational learning environment and opportunities provided by OMSI. A partnership made in heaven!
School-Wide Community Service Project

Park Academy is participating in Pennies for Patients, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's School and Youth Program designed to give students an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Since 1994, students and educators throughout the United States and Canada have raised over $211 million dollars in support of the LLS mission to cure blood cancers and improve the lives of patients and their families.

A Kick-Off Assembly will take place on December 4 at 10:00 AM in Baxter Hall. Students will hear about the program from an LLS staff member and will watch a couple of short, inspirational videos. For two weeks,  from Dec. 4 - Dec. 14, students will collect funds based on a variety of activities/competitions designed by students and faculty.

30 New iPads Integrated Into Curriculum
Students use new assistive technology

Students and teachers at Park Academy have begun integrating new assistive technology this school year.

The 30 new iPads, which were funded by technology grants through the Marie Lamfrom Charitable Foundation, The Reser Family Foundation and the Schnitzer Care Foundation, have created a "mobile learning environment where students can use iPads not only in the classroom, but in a variety of other settings, to gather information and demonstrate their learning on the go," said Bill Westphal, Program Director at Park Academy.

Apps like Learning Ally, Kahn Academy, Photoshop and Illustrator provide students with access to educational programs and limitless opportunities for growth. Software programs such as Google Drive act as online portfolios, letting students and parents access their work from anywhere, at any time. Ms. Kennelly has been using the Screenchomp app to create math videos about pre-algebra.  "Students recorded their drawings and voices to explain a problem on a whiteboard-like screen, then plugged iPads into the projector to present them to the class," said Ms. K.  Other classes and teachers then came to the presentations to observe and learn with Ms. K's pre-algebra students.

Staff and teachers have found that integrating Apple technology into the learning environment has provided quicker and easier access to educational learning programs that would otherwise not be available. Furthermore, the cost for providing educational apps to students through iPads has reduced dramatically when compared with other expensive software programs that have been used in the past.

The Search for the Perfect Pumpkin

Students travel to Bauman Farms for festive fun

Students at Park Academy embarked on a day long quest in search of the perfect pumpkin. They traveled to Bauman Farms in Gervais, Oregon the day before Halloween to pick pumpkins, drink apple cider, eat kettle corn, and visit the animals. It was a wonderful day, filled with fresh country air and lots of school bonding.  Students passed the time walking around the beautiful farm, completing a hayride and corn maze, while enjoying the company of fellow classmates. At the end of the day, students brought home their pumpkins and other decorative items for their cornucopias.

As family members or professionals working with students challenged with dyslexia, we can have a good conceptional understanding of their challenges, but may not be able to fully appreciate the frustration and feelings of failure many students experience daily.

Five simulations will show you how it feels to have a learning challenge caused by any one of the various types of learning-based differences. This experience will improve your understanding of the challenges that your student encounters.
