Joint Retirement Meeting Date Set
The House and Senate Retirement committees will hold a special joint meeting on Thursday, May 7th at 10 AM in Room 606 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building located at 206 Washington Street NW; Atlanta, GA 30334.
The joint committee will vote to send retirement bills for summer actuarial study. Fiscal retirement bills which undergo an actuarial study will be eligible to pass during the 2016 Legislative Session, which convenes in January 2016. SB 152 - Cuts Retirement Benefits & Creates 401(k)
SB 152 by Hunter Hill (R - Atlanta) (Facebook and Twitter) fundamentally changes the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) for educators entering the profession after 2016, though current TRS members may opt in. The bill eliminates automatic Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA's) and significantly reduces the defined retirement benefit for new educators. It allows for optional participation in a defined contribution 401(k) plan.

Contact Senate Retirement Members Now
Now is the time to contact Senate Retirement Committee members and ask them not to send SB 152 for an actuarial study. While it is also worthwhile to communicate with House Retirement members about SB 152, focusing on Senate members is important now because only Senate Retirement Committee members will have the opportunity to vote on sending fiscal retirement legislation originating in the Senate to actuary.
Remember to use your personal (not school) email address and to stress the importance of attracting and retaining committed professional educators to Georgia schools.
