Dixie and Solterra provide design, project management, and landscape installation for the new legacy plaza at the school entrance.
| The legacy plaza grew from a plan by Fulton County Schools to improve security at the school with an expanded building entrance. Knowing that the former student gathering space at the school would be destroyed, the parent volunteers of FONS developed and implemented a plan to create a new gathering spot that was both beautiful and functional. |
As CEO of Solterra Landscape and a graduate of Leadership Sandy Springs, Dixie Speck often contributes her personal expertise and that of her staff and crew to beautifying Sandy Springs and supporting community initiatives. Speck donated design time to the North Springs Charter High School undertaking, helped manage the project by interfacing with other county contractors, and discounted Solterra's rates on installation.

Dixie worked closely with Friends of North Springs (FONS), an organization comprised primarily of parent volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to support North Springs Charter High. Mary Reid, past president of FONS and primary coordinator of this venture, was instrumental in Speck and Solterra becoming involved.
This is not the first time Mary Reid has worked with Solterra. During the 2014 Volunteer for a Better Sandy Springs Day, Solterra Landscape headed the installation project at North Springs Charter High School. Reid says, "We were thrilled with the results of last year's VBSS work day. While that project, along with this one, aren't directly tied to the classroom, the results affect how the students and staff feel as they enter the school campus. From my previous experience of working with Dixie, I knew the proficiency and caring that she and Solterra would bring to our joint effort. Solterra was my top choice to provide landscaping for this legacy plaza project."
With a focus on bolstering school spirit, Dixie included four Spartan Junipers to anchor the corners of the plaza's landscape. The Spartan is the school mascot for North Springs Charter High School.
In addition to work on the plaza itself, Dixie also taught students in the AP environmental science class to properly install plants and shared how the project's new bio-retention ponds helps the environment by providing proper drainage while supporting area birds and other wildlife.
