 Outdoor Activities
to Celebrate the
Winter Holidays

Solterra Landscape is a proud member of the Come Alive Outside movement. The great outdoors is a perfect place to enjoy a sense of community with friends, neighbors and coworkers. The movement encourages individuals, families, businesses and communities to start finding ways to spend time outside.

Here are a few Atlanta activities to consider to create special memories with family and friends this holiday season:

Global Winter Wonderland

at Turner Field through Jan 5th. Carnival rides, Dinosaur Maze, Global Village, and the International Food Baazar.

Live entertainment daily including musical performances, Chinese Acrobats and shows from UniverSoul Circus. Find out more here.

Snow Mountain Christmas through Jan 1st. Wander through the Wonderland Walkway, a dazzling tunnel of lights guiding you to the Snow Angel Palace, where you can have your picture taken with the beautiful Snow Angel and her Toy Soldiers.

Then, all aboard the Singalong Christmas Train for a lively five-mile excursion around the mountain featuring Santa's elves Newt and Holly via satellite from their Christmas Headquarters.  Find out more.

Horse-drawn Carriage Rides in Piedmont Park.

Couples and families can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides in Piedmont Park, the only Atlanta park with carriage rides. Visitors will be carried through the historic areas of the Park, enjoying beautiful holiday lights and ornaments under the scenic Atlanta skyline. Rides are available from 4:00pm to 10:30pm Thursday - Sunday. Each ride is approximately 20 minutes in length. Infants (0-24 mos) ride free. Find out more.

Peach Drop 2014
Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the largest New Year's Eve gathering in the Southeast, and ring in 2014 with Underground Atlanta's Peach Drop! Head down early for a day and evening jam-packed with activities leading up to 2013's last hurrah. As the countdown to midnight begins, the Peach will descend from its 138-feet tower of lights right before confetti showers attendees and a dazzling firework show illuminates the night sky. Entertainment and activities are scheduled throughout the day. Find out more.

FEATURED PROJECT

Helping the Holidays Glow

As the air grows crisp and the holiday season arrives, wreaths and Christmas lights appear--sometimes with a little help from Solterra Landscape.

A few select clients contract with Dixie and crew to deck their homes and halls with holiday décor. The big crepe myrtle tree in the top left photo shimmers with over 5,000 lights!

Solterra is limited by time and manpower to expand their holiday decorating service, but keep us in mind for events you have throughout the year like a  graduation, wedding, or significant anniversary that needs added sparkle and shine with outdoor décor. Contact Dixie to discuss special events you have coming up in 2014. dixie@solterralandscape.com

PLANT OF THE MONTH
Add Winter Blooms to Your Landscape

Many Atlantans are familiar with Camilias -- a flowering shrub currently blooming in the Atlanta area. Add blooms to your winter landscape with two unusual options you may not know about.

The Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) is unusual among fruit trees in that the flowers appear in the autumn or early winter, and the fruits are ripe in late winter or early spring. Described as a large evergreen shrub or small tree, the Loquat can grow to 30 feet tall, but is often smaller, about 9 -13 ft. The leaves are dark green, tough and leathery in texture, with a serrated margin, and densely velvety-hairy below with thick yellow-brown pubescence.

The flowers are 1 inch in diameter, white, with five petals, and produced in stiff panicles of three to ten flowers. The flowers have a sweet, heady aroma that can be smelled from a distance.

The fruit is sweetest when soft and orange with a flavor that is a mix of peach, citrus and mild mango.

Another treat for the eyes and nose is the Edgeworthia shrub, commonly know as Paper Bush. This beauty often begins blooming as early as January in Atlanta's 7a planting zone and flowering can last 4 to 6 weeks. Originating from China, this deciduous shrub grows to 6 feet tall with the same width. The leaves are large and tropical with bark that is an unusual reddish-brown. Paper bush spreads by rhizomes, but isn't invasive, and generally forms a dense, slowly expanding clump of long, pliable stems.

The lovely scent of the blossoms makes it ideal for planting close to walkways or paths with partial shade. Added benefits are that it does not need to be pruned and it is deer resistant!

Contact Meg if you want to discuss how these or other flowering trees and shrubs can be added to accent the seasonal color in your landscape. meg@solterralandscape.com

MAINTENANCE FOCUS

Much Ado About Mulch

Now is the perfect time to clear any remaining leaves in your flowerbeds and off the crowns of your shrubs. Rotting leaves can lower the pH of your soil and cause root rot from excess moisture being trapped at the base of plants.

After you clear out the remaining leaves, add mulch. Here are a few benefits of mulch:

  • Mulching immediately enhances the appearance of your landscape.
  • Mulch improves soil texture and prevents rich topsoil from washing away. As mulch breaks down, it adds nutrition to the soil.
  • Mulch inhibits weed growth--reserving soil nutrients for the plants you WANT to grow in your landscape.
  • Mulch moderates soil-temperature fluctuations. Just like insulation in your home, mulching your plants adds an extra layer of protection between cold winter temperatures and your plant's tender roots. In the summer, mulch can keep the root system of your plants up to 10 degrees cooler than the same plant with no mulch.

Pinestraw blends in well with the surrounding landscape due to its color and texture. Wood mulch offers more options in color and appearance. Common wood mulch varieties in the Atlanta area include pine, hardwood, cypress, and cedar wood mulch. Size variations include shredded, chipped, double milled, large nuggets, and mini-nuggets.

By the way, if fallen leaves still clutter your lawn, contact Jason to schedule a Solterra crew to remove them.
