Solterra is featured at the fall Atlanta Home Show!

As part of our affiliation with ConsultAHomePro.com, Solterra is providing the landscape design for the See-Thru House at the fall Atlanta Home Show, Oct 4th - 6th at the Cobb Galleria Centre. This 3,000 square foot house is a show-stopper and is designed to give you a look inside how a house is built.

With an emphasis on outdoor environments, Solterra will be creating super cool features for the fall See-Thru House -- totally different than the exhibit at the spring show. For this exhibit, we'll design and install an outdoor fireplace, an outdoor bar & grill station, a koi pond, and outdoor seating.

The Atlanta Home Show is Georgia's largest home show and features kitchens and baths, gutters, shutters, windows, doors, siding, roofing, landscape and so much more! Tickets are $10. Click here for a $1 off coupon.

In addition to the See-Thru House exhibit, there will be more than 300 exhibiting companies, a Universal Design Exhibit, and a Backyard Beer Garden.

Chip Wade from HGTV's shows Elbow Room, Designed to Sell, and Curb Appeal along with other experts will be giving free presentations throughout the weekend on a variety of topics at the Reliable Heating & Air Home Show Stage. Here is a schedule of topics and presenters.

Erysimum Adds Variety to Spring Flower Beds

Wallflowers Erysimum, commonly called Wallflower, is a colorful addition to beds of pansies and spring tulips. In the Atlanta area, wallflowers are planted in the fall season along with other winter/spring annuals and bloom in early spring. Blooms in lavender (mauve), yellow, or orange add variety and texture to seasonal color flower beds. The photos shown here are from a plant installation last fall for one of Solterra's clients.

Contact Meg if you want to discuss how wallflowers can be added to the seasonal color in your landscape. meg@solterralandscape.com

Featured Project
 Creating an Aesthetically Beautiful, Wheelchair Accessible Landscape
null
Solterra works with each client to solve their particular challenge -- combining expertise in horticulture and design to create a landscape that beautifully addresses that client's needs.

In this month's featured project, Solterra was called in to do a complete makeover of the outdoor living spaces as much of the outdoor area was unreachable by wheelchair. Research for this project including determining the proper material for pathways that would be easily maneuverable in wet and dry conditions, comfortable widths for pathways and turnaround areas, and precise heights for reaching and working in the planting wall while seated in a wheelchair.

null

Some of the features Solterra designers included to make this landscape accessible to both homeowners:

  • Expanding the pool deck to allow enough room for a wheelchair to maneuver;
  • Building a fire pit with seating, open at the front for wheelchair access;
  • Adding wide, natural-looking flagstone paths at the perimeter and across key areas of the lawn;
  • Creating a raised planting wall that can be accessed while seated in a wheelchair -- the perfect height for planting, weeding, and harvesting herbs.  null

The aesthetics of both interior and outdoor spaces are important to these homeowners. Their love of art gave Dixie, Solterra's lead designer, the idea for creating a piece of living art, a vertical plant wall, behind the fire pit. In addition, the landscape includes a variety of colors, textures, and interesting containers gardens.

Maintenance Focus

Aeration, Overseeding, Top Dressing

Now is the time for aerating and overseeding fescue lawns.

Benefits of aeration include:
  • Loosens compacted soil and increases the availability of water and nutrients.
  • Enhances oxygen levels in the soil, stimulating root growth and enhancing the activity of thatch-decomposing organisms.
  • While removing cores of soil, the spoons or tines also sever roots, rhizomes and stolons. Grass plants are stimulated to produce new shoots and roots that "fill up" the holes in the lawn and increase the density of the turf.
  • Reduces water runoff.
  • Increases the lawn's drought tolerance and improves its overall health.

Solterra is offering an additional service to help improve the performance of fescue. After spreading the seed, we apply "top dressing" -- a rich organic compost over the seeded lawn.

The most important aspect of a healthy lawn is organic activity in the soil. Top dressing creates an active, healthy soil as earthworms and other organisms carry the compost down to the root zone of the lawn. Also, compost top dressing has been shown to create significant and measurable resistance to disease in lawn grass.

It is our desire to help you have the best looking lawn possible. Contact Jason to schedule aeration, overseeding and top dressing for your fescue lawn.  jason@solterralandscape.com
