Greenville Chamber Launches Pilot Internship Program
The Chamber is pleased to pilot a new program to prepare students from Greenville Technical College's Accounting Department as they seek internships with area employers. The program connects 30 students with business mentors for a focused, intensive period to get students ready to identify, apply for, interview and succeed in one of the many opportunities afforded to students in this discipline. Mentors for this phase of the program include individuals from A.T. Locke, Furman University, The Greenville News, NBSC, US&S, and Ken McColl (retired). Student will meet with mentors to discuss business etiquette, have opportunities to network, and take part in a mock interviews with Chamber volunteers.
This program is led by Robyn Miller under the guidance of the Chamber's Education and Workforce Committee, a group focused on bridging the gap between business and education in three major areas: early childhood, K12 and higher education. The business community can provide resources in each of these areas to build stronger talent pipelines and promote positive outcomes.
Greenville's unemployment rate is hovering at a level not seen since prior to the "Great Recession." This is good news, however according to a 2014 Brookings Institution report on youth labor force participation, the Greenville Metro saw a significant decrease in employment rates for young adults between 2000 and 2012. Their prescription? "Policy and program efforts to reduce youth joblessness and labor force underutilization should focus on the following priorities: incorporating more work-based learning (apprenticeships, co-ops, internships) into education and training; creating tighter linkages between secondary and post-secondary education and ensuring that training meets regional labor market needs."
Workforce is the differentiating factor of the future. By linking students to business earlier and at multiple points in their educational journeys, we can promote more successful outcomes for students and more competitive businesses overall. For more information, contact Hank Hyatt.
