NEXT Up
December 2013 Updates from NEXT and the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

When Texas Governor Rick Perry realized he'd have two open hours to fill between speaking engagements in the Upstate, he asked to tour the NEXT Innovation Center and meet with enterpreneurs. He got the full tour, including visits with
Selah Genomics, SCIO Diamond, and The Iron Yard. NEXT leaders convened 20 NEXT CEOs and business leaders for a roundtable discussion. The group talked about economic development strategies employed in Texas including the Texas Emerging Technology Fund that invests in early-stage companies as they commercialize emerging technologies.

Key Year-End Deadlines for Investors and Startups

As the holiday season quickly approaches, we'd like to remind entrepreneurs and investors of some very important deadlines before the year comes to an end:

If you raised early stage capital in 2013 (or hope to before the year ends):

Be sure to apply for approval as a Qualified Business with the Secretary of State as soon as possible. Once approved, accredited angel investors can claim a 35% income tax credit for their investment in your company. You can download the 2-page application here.

If you are an investor who invested in a South Carolina startup in 2013 (or will before year end): Make sure the company applies to be a Qualified Business with the Secretary of State as soon as possible (see above). Once the business is qualified, you can apply for a 35% state income tax credit for eligible investments. The deadline to apply for a credit is December 31, so complete this credit application form from the Department of Revenue as soon as possible.
