Small Business of the Month: Homewatch CareGivers!
 | | From left to right: Greenville Chamber Board Chairman Mike Riordan, Chamber President & CEO Ben Haskew, Award Sponsor Ken Pelanda (Charter Business), Award Committee Member Frank Mobley (Immedion), Homewatch CareGivers franchise owner Alan Shaw and client care manager Michelle Rex. |
Alan Shaw started Homewatch CareGivers from the seeds of personal tragedy as well as a desire to move his volunteer activities to positively impact the special needs of elderly and disabled persons. This aspiration led him on a search for a business that had people at its heart. Therefore, after a 30-year career as a CPA, CFO and Mortgage Broker, Alan decided to open the Greenville Homewatch Caregivers office with more desire than experience.
Operations began in June 2006 with three employees. The company has grown to over 40 employees who have provided more than 300,000 hours of care in Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Spartanburg counties. The focus of the company is to offer clients of all ages the opportunity to remain in their homes by giving assistance with activities of daily living - those things we all do every day but may take for granted such as bathing, dressing, preparing meals, doing errands, etc. Some clients only need a few hours a week of assistance doing errands while other require 24/7 care.

New Diversity & Inclusion Initiative Programs
As part of the Chamber's efforts to support talented women and minorities in our community in achieving leadership positions in greater numbers, the Chamber has developed the Diversity Leadership Pipeline. With this Pipeline, the Greenville Chamber serves as a key resource for Upstate organizations looking to fill volunteer leadership roles. The Pipeline is currently gathering information from qualified individuals who may be interested in serving in various leadership capacities, including nonprofit and corporate boards of directors in our community. Click here to join the Diversity Leadership Pipeline!
The CAPACITY Goal Setters program is designed to track and help facilitate the development of goals for spending with minority and women-owned businesses. The Chamber is working with Upstate companies and organizations to collect and track spending with qualified minority-owned suppliers.
In seeking to increase supplier diversity efforts, Goal Setter organizations commit to setting annual spend goals, reporting actual spend dollars, and tracking progress with using diverse suppliers. In return, the Greenville Chamber commits to provide resources to assist with supplier diversity efforts, maintain confidentiality for all information shared, and to recognize companies as CAPACITY Goal Setters on the Chamber website. BEST Tip of the Week
Did you know that you can reduce the energy consumption of your vending machines by an average of 46%? How many vending machines do you have in your business? You can install Vending Misers on your vending machines for under $200. Vending Miser is an energy efficiency tool which is compatible with all types of cold drink vending machines. It saves money and power by turning off lighting and managing compressor cooling cycles when they are not needed. It does this through use of a Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR) to power down the machine when the area surrounding it is vacant. Then it monitors the room`s temperature and automatically re-powers the cooling system at one to three hour intervals, independent of sales, to ensure that the product stays cold. One Vending Miser can be used for a series of up to four machines. To learn more simple ways to reduce your utility costs, visit FurmanBEST.biz.
