Non-Profit Spotlight: Susan G. Komen SC Mountains to Midlands
Though Susan G. Komen lost her battle with breast cancer, her legacy lives on through the work of Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ, the organization her sister Nancy G. Brinker started in her honor. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since its inception in 1982. Komen's promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
Across the country, that promise is upheld by a network of 122 local Affiliate offices. The SC Mountains to Midlands Affiliate is dedicated to combating breast cancer at every front. Up to 75 percent of the Affiliate's net income goes toward funding grants to local hospitals and community organizations that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for medically underserved women. The remaining net income (a minimum of 25 percent) supports the national Komen Grants Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world. BEST Tip of the Week
One of the most effective ways to reduce utility costs is through employee engagement. No matter how efficient your equipment may be, its efficiency will not be optimized if your business does not promote a culture of conservation. Consider posting monthly usage rates to employees and management and celebrate reductions. This helps people to see that the changes they are making are actually making a difference! Additional motivators include:
- Offering employees a percentage of the first year's direct savings from water & energy conservation & waste reduction
- Throwing an employee party or cookout with the money they have helped your business save
