Award-winning storyteller caps Summer Reading Program

As a grand finale for this year's Summer Reading Program, all ages can enjoy animal and nature tales presented by Bobby Norfolk, an Emmy-award-winning storyteller. Presentations will be 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 8, at Main Street Library; 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8, at South Morrison Public Library; 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, at Grissom Library; and 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 9, at Pearl Bailey Library. Children may enter to win door prizes at the presentations.

Win free movie passes to new theater

Free passes to the new Paragon City Center 12 Theater will be awarded to winners in "The Giver" Book to Movie Contest. It is open to all residents of Newport News and all Library cardholders who have read "The Giver" book by Lois Lowry and submit a completed entry form with correct answers by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The contest is sponsored by the Newport News Public Library System and Paragon City Center 12 Theater.
STEM Fair, Community Day at South Morrison

All ages are invited to discover ways that science, technology, engineering and mathematics are needed to succeed, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 23, at South Morrison Family Education Center. Presented by the Library System in conjunction with the South Morrison Partnership for Youth, the fair will coincide with the Impact 2014 event and include sponsors, free giveaways of books and school supplies, food, games and more. Newport News Public Libraries are collecting donations of school supplies for the giveaway. For more information, please call South Morrison Public Library at 757-369-6810.

Aug. 13, 20, Workforce Series:
Teens and adults ages 14 and older can network with others while obtaining some needed skills for entering the workforce, 2-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at South Morrison Public Library, and 2-4:30p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Pearl Bailey Library. This workshop is geared toward providing assistance with online job search, creating an email account, designing a resume, or completing an online application.

Authors illustration Aug. 14, Application Deadline for Local Authors' Day: Newport News published and self-published authors are invited to participate in the Library System's Local Authors' Day, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, in the cafeteria at the South Morrison Family Education Center. Participating authors will have a table to sell and sign books and talk to patrons. Authors who are interested in participating must drop off one copy of any work they plan to sell with a completed contract at any Newport News Public Library by Aug. 14. Aug. 11, iPad for Newbies: All ages can bring their iPad and learn its basic uses, 4-5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 11, at South Morrison Public Library. Register now.

Other May-August computer classes: Free adult computer classes are offered at Grissom, Main Street, Pearl Bailey and South Morrison Libraries on an ongoing basis covering various topics, including computer and Internet basics, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, resume writing and more.
