Loosely Knit Craft Sale in November
Loosely Knit Craft Sale
Shoppers can purchase locally handmade craft items and help Grissom Library, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, and Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Library. Items for sale include hats, scarves, shawls, afghans,  slippers, baby items, dishcloths, Christmas ornaments and more. Presented by the Loosely Knit Group and the Newport News Public Library System Foundation. All proceeds benefit Grissom Library.

Civil Rights grant award

Created Equal logo The American civil rights struggle will be explored  next year thanks to a grant awarded to the Library System by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Library System will offer programming to include four documentaries with new footage illustrating the history of civil rights in America in February 2014.

Special teen events at all libraries
2013 TRW logo Teens can Seek the Unknown and celebrate Teen Read Week, Oct.13-19, with these special events:

  • Oct. 1-21, Seek the Unknown @ Grissom Library: Teens can provide feedback to Grissom Library by completing a Teen Survey, Oct. 1-21. Surveys will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Teens also are encouraged to vote for the Top Ten Books of 2013.
  • Oct. 14-18, Seek the Unknown@South Morrison: Teens ages 12 to 18 can participate in a scavenger hunt by getting new clues anytime 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 14-Friday, Oct. 18, at South Morrison Public Library.  
  •  Oct. 14, Smoothie Drink Challenge: Teens ages 12-18 can work in teams of two to create a delicious smoothie using a secret "veggie" ingredient, 5-7:30 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 14, at Pearl Bailey Library. Register now.
  • Oct. 15, Seek the Unknown Book Talk: What are you reading? Teens in grades 6-12 can bring their favorite book to discuss with the group, 3-4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Grissom Library. Don't give away any spoilers! Refreshments provided.  
  • Oct. 16, Get Yourself in the Game: Teens ages 12 -17 can play interactive and group games, 4-5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Main Street Library. Refreshments provided.
  • Oct. 16, Minute to Win It: Teens ages 12-18 are invited to compete in the PBL Minute To Win It competition, 5-7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Pearl Bailey Library.  
  • Oct. 17, Teen Craft Crayon Art:Teens ages 12 - 17 can create a colorful masterpiece using crayon art, 4-5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, at Main Street Library. Wear or bring an old T-shirt because it could get messy.

October Booksales offers great deals, chance to help us!

Get great deals on gently used books and DVDs and more while supporting the Library when you shop at these upcoming Booksales. Prices are 25 cents for children's books and VHS tapes, 50 cents for paperbacks, $1 for CDs and DVDs and $1-$3 for hardbacks. Collectibles and special interest items are individually priced.

 

Library's Fall Festival booth Oct. 5-6, Fall Festival of Folklife Booksale: Stop by the Library System's booth at the Fall Festival of Folklife, Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6, at Newport News Park. Get great deals and library information, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

  

  Oct. 24-26, Friends Booksale: Hours for the sale are noon - 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24; 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25; and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., SaturdFriends logoay, Oct. 26, at West Avenue Library. A special preview for Friends members only is 10 a.m.-noon on Thursday, Oct. 24. Books are sorted by categories that include children's books, biographies, cookbooks, crafts, military interest, history, large print and religion. Selections are available in French, German, Italian and Spanish as well. From 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, you can fill a Friends bag for only $5!

Fire safety program Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23: Fire Safety Preschool Storytime: Children ages 3-6 can learn the importance of fire safety, meet a Newport News firefighter and tour a fire truck. This special storytime is 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Grissom Library; 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9, at South Morrison Public Library; 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Main Street Library; and 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Pearl Bailey Library.  

   

Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, Story Yoga: Youth ages 5 to 11 can keep both their bodies and minds fit by enjoying stories while learning the basics of yoga, 2:30-3 p.m., Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23, at the South Morrison Public Library. Register now.

 

Oct. 5, Music and More Storytime: Children ages 2-5 and their families can enjoy a high-energy storytime with lots of music and movement, 11-11:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, at Grissom Library. Register now.


Oct. 7, New Teen Advisory Committee at Main Street Library: Teens ages 12-17 are invited to provide input on library programs, materials and services for teens, 4-5 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, at Main Street Library.

Homework Helpers:
Pharmaceutical students from Hampton University will help youth ages 6-18 one-on-one with math and science homework, 4-6 p.m., Tuesdays, October 8, 15, 22, 29, at Pearl Bailey Library. Students should bring their textbooks or homework sheets.

 

Oct. 17, Lights On Afterschool @ South Morrison: All ages are encouraged to stop by the South Morrison Public Library, 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, to explore the library and experience the various afterschool programs available at South Morrison.

 

Halloween at Grissom Oct. 29, Halloween Spooktacular: Children ages 6-12 can enjoy crafts, games, and creepy treats (while supplies last), 4:30-5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Grissom Library.

 

Oct. 30, Halloween Storytime: Children ages 2-6 and their families can give their costumes a test run before the big day by enjoying a not-so-spooky storytime and mini trick-or-treat with library staff, 6:30-7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Grissom Library.   

 

Oct. 31, Teens + Halloween: Teens ages 13-18 who are too old for trick-or-treating can have Halloween fun by playing ghoulish games and decorating cookies (while supplies last), 6:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 31, at Grissom Library.

Oct. 17, Jeff Shaara Author Talk and Book Signing:
 

Jeff Shaara

Jeff Shaara, the New York Times bestselling author of historical and military fiction, will present an author talk and book signing, 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, at Christopher Newport University. The new location for the event is the Grand Ballroom of the David Student Union. Two free tickets are available per person while supplies last. Call your library to find out whether tickets are still available.
