A nonperishable, nonexpired food item or personal item can take the place of a fine for overdue materials from Saturday, Nov. 24, to Sunday, Dec. 30, at all Newport News Public Libraries.

Painting at Main Street Library
Some programs and services at Main Street Library will  be disrupted because of painting in December

The Business Information Center and Computer Lab will be closed Dec. 10-11.

Circulation services will be relocated on Dec. 5-7 to three other locations: the Virginiana Room, a portion of the Children's Service desk and to the second floor service desk.

All Library materials are getting  new stickers for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Please do not remove these stickers from materials. Read more about RFID. Thanks!
Music series coming
America's Music logo
Main Street Library will host a six-week program series on "America's Music" featuring film clips, discussions and performances in February, March and April.

Holiday tree illustration Dec. 1, Grissom Tree Trim: Kids ages 4-11 help decorate the Grissom tree, hear holiday stories and make ornaments for the  tree and one to take home, 4-5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at Grissom Library. Register now.

 

Globe ornament Dec. 3, Winter Craft: Globe Ornaments: Crafting instructor Ruthann Grabowski will show adults how to construct holiday ornaments, 6-8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3, at Grissom Library. Supplies will be provided. Register now.

 

Dec. 6, FKO Movie, "Arthur Christmas:" Kids ages 6-11 can enjoy a free showing of the movie, 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6, at Pearl Bailey Library. No registration required.

Dec. 8, Super Saturday Holiday Fest at Pearl Bailey Library:
10:30 a.m., Holiday Storytime:
Youth ages 3-6 can enjoy holiday stories and a craft, 10:30 a.m.-11:45 a.m. 
Noon, Visit with Santa:
Children can visit with Santa, noon-1 p.m.
2-4 p.m., Concert:
Jazz Guitarist Lonnie Dixon and Company will perform holiday music
2-5 p.m., Refresh Your Holiday Wreath, Other Crafts:
Crafting instructor Michelle Belsches will show adults how to make a new holiday wreath or revitalize one of their old ones using materials provided. Registration required. Call Pearl Bailey Library for information.

Felix Simmons Dec. 14, 15, Kwanzaa program: Storyteller Felix Simmons will provide information on the history and significance of the celebration of Kwanzaa, 4-5 p.m., Friday, Dec. 14, at West Avenue Library and 3-4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 15, at Main Street Library. No registration required.   

 

Dec. 17-22, Holiday Family Matinees: Families can enjoy a free holiday movie, 3-5 p.m., each day from Dec. 17-22 at Grissom Library. No registration required.    

 

Elliot Family String Quartet Dec. 20, 21, Winter Concert Series: Elliott Family Quartet: The Elliott Family String Quartet will present a free concert of classical and fiddle tunes, pop music and Christmas favorites, 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at Main Street Library and 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at West Avenue Library. No registration required.      

 

'Grinch Stole Christmas' movie poster Dec. 27, Free Movie: Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas": Kids ages 8-17 can watch the movie "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" then make a craft to take home, 2-4:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, in the gym at South Morrison Family Education Center. The 2000 movie is rated PG. No registration is required.

Thousands of free books were given away during the SOMO Community Family Day Nov. 3 at South Morrison Family Education Center. The books were provided by Mini Price Storage,  First Book and other donations.


Teen's video is finalist in regional contest

A strong emotional tug and help from Pearl Bailey Library helped a teen first-time movie maker's video stand out in a regional anime video contest. The video, titled "Unresolved Feelings: Naruto's Complicated Life," was chosen as a finalist in the Anime Music Video Contest and screened at the Nekocon 15 Convention.The first video ever created by 16-year-old Nasir Curry, a member of the Pearl Bailey Library Anime and Manga Club, it told the story of two close friends who were pulled apart.

Movie poster: 'Dark Knight Rises' Dec. 13, Free Movie for Teens: 'The Dark Knight Rises': Teens ages 13-18 can enjoy a free showing of the movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," 4:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13, at Pearl Bailey Library. The movie is rated PG-13. Free popcorn will be served. No registration required.   

 

Dec. 27, Wii and XBox 360 Sports Game Day: Youth ages 8-18 can enjoy playing video sports games on the Wii and Kinect for Xbox 360, 2:30-4:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, at Pearl Bailey Library. Board games will also be available. Call the Library for more information.
