President's Message, Alexander Castellanos
|
How many of you remember Barnett Bank? I never had the privilege of working with Barnett, I just had my first bank account with Barnett. I know many of our members started their career at Barnett and have fond memories of the company. This past Saturday I met with a dear friend of my dad's Carlos Arboleya Sr. Carlos was the first Cuban American to rise to become President and then CEO and Chairman of a Bank in the United States, a position he held at Barnett Bank South Florida. While that is quite an accomplishment in itself, when you get to know Carlos and learn his story you see what true leadership, determination and passion personify.
Many years ago Carlos purchased his neighbor's house and converted it into his study and place to display and keep the collection of awards, achievements, articles, photos, and other collectibles he has accumulated over the years. As we went through some of them on Saturday morning, all I could think is how one simple man could have such a positive impact on a community, a company, an industry and a country. Many don't know but among the many things Carlos accomplished he personally assisted the FBI in capturing criminals and in negotiating peace during a prison riot where over a hundred guards were held captive. Carlos has been awarded many medals and other achievements but in talking to him you see one of his proudest is the Boy Scout Silver Buffalo, the highest medal the Boy Scouts award. Carlos is selfless man, he is humble and simple, and has an immense passion about doing things correctly, giving thanks and helping others. I invite you to visit his website to learn more about him, http://carlosarboleya.com/
Carlos is a testament to what America is all about, a man can arrive here with $45 dollars in his pocket, a wife and child and work his way up to the top. Along the way many doubted him, shut doors on him and pushed him down. He just picked himself up and kept on going, in the process he helped everyone around him achieve success by pulling them up with him as he rose to the top. He never lost sight of what being part of the community was by giving his time, talent and treasure to the causes that are dear to his heart. He continues to do it all with a passion that oozes from his soul. It is not a motivational speech it is his way of life.
I close my year as President first thanking all of you for the support you all have given me and secondly asking for each and every one of us to live our lives as Carlos has, being proud to be part of this great country, doing our part to serve our family, our clients, our community, our companies, our association and our industry, if we do that the rest will take care of itself.
I am very excited about our upcoming 61st Annual Convention June 18-19 at the Delray Beach Marriott, and I look forward to seeing you there.

QM is Just the Beginning
Jennifer Creech, CEO/President, InHouse USA
QM and CFPB are the priorities most in the business are concerned about these days, and there are very good reasons for us to be focused on those topics. But there is a bigger picture - a much bigger picture - beyond the trees in our industry's path. The government is still our primary investor, and QM and QRM are initiatives intended to standardize investor-grade mortgages going forward so that we can reduce the government's involvement and return to an industry funded primarily by private capital. What can the valuation community do to make that larger goal come to fruition and usher in new, better era for mortgage liquidity? Among other things, we can use technology to manage our processes better and more transparently, provide superior products and service to our borrowers, and bring lenders greater control in their compliance and collateral risk scenarios.
In this session, Jennifer Creech, president and CEO of InHouse, Inc. illuminates the role of the valuations industry in creating a compliant, economical and transparent lending environment for the present and future.

Legislative Update
|

by Eric Prutsman, MBAF Legislative Representative
Every legislative session is unique in its own way, and the 2014 Session is no different. For the first time in years, there hasn't been a rush by legislators to file foreclosure and property insurance reform legislation. Although there are still plenty of issues to address in the property insurance market, the absence of foreclosure bills appears to be an indicator that the Legislature is looking forward, not backward.
Earlier this Session, MBAF President Alex Castellanos, and other members of the Executive Committee, visited with legislators in Tallahassee to convey MBAF's appreciation for the Legislature's past efforts on behalf of our members. Those early-Session legislative meetings pay dividends later in Session when legislators check-in with MBAF to ask our advice on how a particular bill might impact the industry and our members.
We have worked closely this Session with State Representative Ritch Workman who has sponsored House Bill 631 relating to mortgage lending. The bill is a "clean-up" proposal that repeals various provisions of Chapter 494 that are no longer necessary due to federal preemption by regulations coming out of Washington, D.C. The Senate companion bill to HB 631 is SB 666, and is sponsored by State Senator Nancy Detert. Both bills are on track to be considered by their respective chambers.
Another issue that has been on the minds of many Floridians is finding a "fix" to the flood insurance crisis. Senator Jeff Brandes, and Representative Ed Hooper committed to finding a solution early in the Session. The bills, SB 542 and HB 879, authorize insurers to offer flood insurance in Florida. Although Congress continues to reassure constituents that it will find an answer, Sen. Brandes and Rep. Hooper decided that Florida should control its own destiny on the issue. The Senate has already passed its bill, and the House bill has passed all of its committees and is waiting to be heard on the House Floor.
With only a couple of week left of the 2014 Session, there still is plenty to do and plenty of bills that hope to make it to the Governor's desk. We'll return soon to report on what bills passed and which bills didn't.

Chapter News
|
The MBA of Florida has seven chapters around the state:
Tallahassee
Jacksonville
Central Florida
Tampa Bay
Gulf Coast
SW Florida
South Florida
Each chapter has it's own local activities and meetings throughout the year. Each has it's own charity or charities they support. Not only are they actively engaging in education and networking they also support the communities where they live. Below are some reports from our chapters on what is going on with them!
by Matthew Goldman, CLO, MBA of Central Florida President
MBA of Central Florida has had a great first quarter of 2014. In January we enjoyed a joint meeting with FAMP, and heard Andrea Lee Negroni, Of Counsel, BuckleySandler speak on "Social Media is HOT for Marketing - But Do You Know the Risks?" Then in February we learned about "Mortgage Originations Version 14 - What Systems Are You Running?" by Steve Richman, "That MI Guy," with Genworth Financial. We learned some interesting statistics in March from John B. Jung Jr. ,Senior who is Managing Director of BB&T Capital Markets who spoke on "Competing in Today's Global Economy." Our Chapter always collects at every meeting and event donations for SafeHouse of Central Florida which is a non-profit organization dedicated to seeing an end to the cycle of domestic violence. We continue at every meeting to raise funds for MPAC donations thank you to the support of our members. We are excited at our April meeting to begin a huge fundraiser for MPAC. We are selling a limited number of tickets for an opportunity to win a Tablet. Our chapter is determined to exceed our donation amount to MPAC from last year, and we believe this will enable us to do so. We are also excited for our 18th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, May 19th, 2014 at Heathrow Country Club. For information on upcoming meetings and events please visit our website at http://www.mbacf.org.
by Randy Galloway, MBA of Jacksonville President
Our chapter partnered with FAMP, NEFBA and NEFAR to hold a North East Florida Real Estate Symposium which was well attended by over 250 industry folks. We had sponsors for the event and offered a free full breakfast. Our chapter brought in over $2500.00 for that event! We continue to have over 20 attend our breakfast meetings the first Thursday of each month. We have established our new leaders for 2014 - 2015 and they will take the reins at our June 5th Meeting. We are in the beginning stages of planning our 2014 1st Annual Golf Tournament which will be held on October 10th. At this time we continue to push forward, grow and be in involved as an organization.
by Randi Gocinski, MBA of South Florida President
We started our year with Sue Dutcher, First American Title Insurance Company who presented "Referrals-One of the Keys to Your 2014 Plan" . In February we has Steve Richman presenting "Mortgage Orginations Version 14, What System are you running" In March we had Susan Walsh from Radian present "Sell Like a Rock Star". Our biggest meeting so far this year was April where we had Russell McInerney discuss "How You CAN get a condo approved over 75% LTV", there were 62 attendees!
May 2, 2014 MBA of South Florida holds its Second Annual Golf Tournament at Bonaventure Country Club. Title Sponsor Mortgage Information Services, Gold Sponsor JPMorgan Chase, Silver Sponsors BB&T, Dart Appraisal, PRMG(Paramount Residential Mortgage Group), Bronze Sponsor UAMC(Universal American Mortgage Company) and American Bancshares. 100% of the raffle and mulligan ticket sales go directly to Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to support one wish. We currently have 70 golfers registering and hopefully more in the next week.
MBA of Tallahassee

(pictured Stephanie Kern (L) and Dana Cummins (R)
The Women's Council of Realtors of Tallahassee, hosted the 23rd Annual Chili Cook off on 2/25/2014. MBA of Tallahassee sponsored their past president, Dana Cummins, to cook. Dana is a veteran winner of this event and has brought home the hot & Spiciest award 2009,2010,2012 and 2014! WCR does this as one of their main fundraisers every year. The WCR President will select a charity in the community to donate the proceeds to.
Each chapter is so very active and enjoys the benefit of monthly meetings for greater networking opportunities on a localize level.

MBA National Takes On Diversity
|
In order to serve consumers, the real estate finance industry must reflect the demographics of America in both our workforce and our lending. Census data indicates that by 2050, the United States will be "minority-majority." We've made progress in recent years, but not nearly enough
So we decided we needed a plan. We gathered some great minds and caring individuals, and got to work, the result of which was the 2013 launch of MBA's Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Over the next several months, you'll hear more about committee initiatives and how you can get involved, but right now, we invite you to join your colleagues at our first Strategic Markets and Diversity Conference, taking place June 25-27 in Washington, DC.
This important event will bring together top industry experts to explore everything from best practices in fair lending, to growing your business through diverse markets, to recruiting and retaining top talent, to compliance under Dodd-Frank section 342. Don't miss this outstanding opportunity to discuss the many ways a more diverse workforce leads to innovation and growth.
MBA takes our leadership role in the real estate finance industry very seriously, and we are very excited about the potential of this new initiative. We hope you will join us in moving it forward. Register today.
Sincerely,
Debra Still, CMB David H. Stevens
President and Chief Executive Officer, Pulte Mortgage President and Chief Executive Officer, MBA

Want to be Extremely, Wildly, Radically Successful?
Joel Peterson, Chairman, JetBlue Airways, Stanford Business School
Submitted by Kristina Holmen-Mohr, CMB, LTG, AMP
|
Whichever adjective you select for the success you're seeking - extreme, wild, radical - is it really possible that a few tweaks could be all you need to reach these new heights?
Last week I read a popular LinkedIn post in which the author, Alex Banayan, promised to disclose "The 5 Traits of Wildly Successful People". This sounded like a bargain: just 5 steps to wild success. With such straightforward tips - be persistent, ignore convention, be a problem-solver, cut back on sleep, build good relationships - taking life to the next level sounded downright easy.
Indeed, countless blog posts list success-ensuring traits, the kinds of virtues or habits everyone should cultivate. Some recipes for success include as few as five ingredients, as did Mr. Banayan's, or as many as 50.
But here's the thing: Fun as it may be to peruse these lists, simply reading through grab bags of traits and attitudes won't ensure success in work and life. The very reason success is elusive is that it still requires a lot of hard and often tedious work. Not just daily work at the office, but the constant work of making ourselves into more effective, more adaptable, more thoughtful people. That's what it means to build character. No secrets here. Just hours, days, months, and years of persistence in doing what matters most, honoring commitments, and working well with others.
For over twenty years, I worked closely with Stephen R. Covey, author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" - one of the best-selling business books of all time, with 15 million copies sold in 38 languages. Many of today's list-like blog headlines are derivative of his famous title and insightful suggestions for building a principle-centered life.
Stephen - who passed away last year - might have been distressed at how his approach to building habits for successful living has morphed into a cottage industry of those peddling lists of secrets to wild financial windfalls and potent influence.
Stephen was not about these 'ends.' Instead, he was about being mindful of the person you become on the way there. He celebrated the idea of finding one's "true north," the guiding set of ethics and habits through which people develop character. He liked to quote Aristotle on the subject: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act - but a habit."
Covey wasn't talking low-level habits like brushing your teeth, washing the dishes or showing up early for meetings. His "habits" were ones of character - the kind that take time and repetition to build. Some were about thinking, some were about doing, some were about treating others with respect - but they were all about building character, about doing the right things over and over until they become ingrained -- what Aristotle called the "stable equilibrium of the soul."
Aristotle's notion - the one Covey also espoused - is a profound one. Success in life is rooted in aligning our actions with our values, until our choices flow naturally, and without calculation, from our character. Like everything else worth doing, this is a matter of consistent, determined practice - as unromantic, familiar, and headline-unfriendly a secret as that may be.
So, nothing against lists, and nothing against anything that can inspire or help you become more successful. But, in my experience, there are no shortcuts to success.
