SURPRISED BY LOVE

The same wonderful thing happens every day. Multiple times each day, in fact. My daughter Hadley, who just turned 2, will find my iPhone sitting on the counter or a table. She'll bring it to me and ask if she can play with it. As I nod my head yes, Hadley pushes the main button and then gasps and looks up at me in awe. "Mommy, look!," she says, as she points excitedly to the picture of her and her brother. "Mommy, look! Hadley and Elliott!"
And she looks so surprised and pleased and happy. Every time. It's as if she sees that picture and feels like the most important and beloved child in the world. YOU have a picture of ME on your phone? Every. Single. Time. And I smile and respond to her, "Yes. That's you. Mommy loves you a lot."
This exchange will never get old for me. How wonderful that this sweet child allows herself to be surprised by love every single day.
Now of course God doesn't have an iPhone. But if God did, there would be a picture of every single one of us on the home screen. God's house would be full of reminders of us and how loved we are. And if we looked through God's scrapbook, I imagine we would look up in awe and say, "YOU have a picture of ME? You were there when all of this happened?" And God would smile and say to us, "Yes. I was there with you. I'm always with you. I love you more than you can know."
Let yourself be surprised by God's love today. Sit in awe of the fact that you are a beloved child of God. Find fulfillment in the knowledge that God stands with you at every moment.
It's easy to forget because there's no picture to point at and gasp. But we can help each other remember and we can offer one another signs of God's surprising love every single day.
