Car Boots

There is a local establishment here in Marietta near the Square that has started "booting" the cars of non-customers parked in their parking lot. If you have never heard of it, a car boot is a bright yellow, metal contraption that is secured to a vehicle's tire in order to restrict the car from moving from its illegally parked location. The only way that you can have the car boot removed is to pay the parking attendant a steep fine.  This local establishment resorted to booting cars when they discovered that paying customers have nowhere to park.
When my wife and I walk to the Square, we often have a front row seat for the confrontations between the parking attendant and the illegally parked individual.  First, the car owner will have a look of anger and often mutter something impolite under their breath.  Then, they will look around to see if there are any signs indicating that non-customers cannot park in the lot (there are many signs).  Once the driver learns that the cost of removing the boot is $125, things can get nasty.
I have seen people throw their hands up in the air in frustration. I have heard people use terribly profane language.  I have even seen a man scream in the face of the parking lot attendant.  I understand your frustration and your anger over the situation, but let's be completely honest, you made a mistake and now you are suffering the consequences...$125 worth of consequences (I hope that Friday night Jimmy Buffett cover band was worth it).
Most of the responses and actions of illegally parked individuals towards the parking attendant would not be defined as "virtuous."  Moments like these can bring out the very worst in us.  We seem to forget that our own frustrations and mistakes do not grant us permission to spew venom on those around us. During our 4-week sermon series that begins this Sunday, we will be examining some of the virtues that define the Christian life and how we can better embody these virtues.  Not only will we be asking ourselves how we can be virtuous in the good times of life, but we will also ask ourselves how can we embody Christian virtues when life hands us yellow lemons...or maybe a yellow car boot.
