A  GOD OF  POSSIBILITIES

I write this just before the Braves begin their season, their last one in Atlanta before the move to Cobb County.  I have been a baseball fan for almost sixty years, every one of which was spent in fervent support of the Braves in Milwaukee, in Atlanta, and, soon to be, in Smyrna!
The pre-game ceremonies include a retrospective of great games  and I remember most of them.  My personal list is long and full of Braves players whom most of us fans would remember, but among my favorite Braves games was not played in Atlanta and doesn't even involve a Braves player!
On September 14, 1986, the Braves were playing in San Francisco and Bob Brenly, normally a catcher, was dispatched by the Giants to third base to replace an injured teammate.  And Brenly had a terrible day.  In fact he had a day that had not been matched in its terrible-ness in over forty years.  Brenly entered baseball infamy when he made four defensive errors in the fourth inning.  He botched three simple ground balls and made an errant throw. In the thousands of games since 1942, no player had performed so poorly. Teammates said later that Brenly sat on the bench "stupefied, totally numb."
But what makes this among my favorite games is how Brenly handled his disgrace.  He stayed in the game and he made a difference.  In the fifth inning, he hit a home run. In the seventh, he drove in two runs with a single.  And in the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, he ended the game with a home run and the "goat" of the game had become its great hero.
I suppose that not many of us have hit game-winning home runs, but we know something about disastrous errors. We know about falling and failing, about being friendless, fired, and afraid. We know about crying and losing and loneliness. We know heartbreaks and sadness.
There are wonderful stories in our faith about people who were down but not out. Abraham and Joseph, Moses and Miriam come to mind. I think of David and Ruth, of Mary Magdelene and Zacchaeus. We learn that God's love shines even in darkness.  There is nothing final about failing and we should never believe that God is finished with us. Perhaps we need to get back to what we were doing.  Perhaps a new door will be opened to us. Perhaps there is a new land of opportunity; perhaps we should claim the old one.  Our God is a God of great possibilities, and we should never, never quit believing that.
And I'll see you this Sunday.
