Let the Journey Begin...

Change often comes slow for me. I like stability and continuity. Growing up, my sister was always rearranging the furniture in her room and giving herself a makeover. ElaineWilder The furniture in my room, however, never moved, and the only thing that changed about my hair was whether the length was just above or just below my shoulders. I mean, why change a good thing?!?
A friend recently shared a quote that has broadened my perspective. In his book, "The Exquisite Risk," Mark Nepo invites us to think about change. He says, "To journey without being changed is to be a nomad. To change without journeying is to be a chameleon. To
journey and be transformed by the journey is to be a pilgrim."
Nepo focuses on two words: change and journey. He reminds us that the most productive changes are purposeful and take place over time. We don't change simply for change's sake. We change because we want to become better. We change because we want to move
forward. And when we change in a substantial way, we find ourselves transformed. We become something new.
Advent is all about transformation. The Christ child is coming and we need to get ready to welcome him yet again. Christ has promised to transform our world, but he starts by transforming individual lives. Your life is good, but it can be better. What parts of you are yearning for change and transformation?
Let's not be nomads who wander aimlessly. Let's not be chameleons who change with the wind. Let us be pilgrims who follow Christ and allow ourselves to become better and more faithful with each passing day.
Come, let us journey together towards the manger in Bethlehem. Let us be transformed by the Christ child this Advent season.
