EVERYTHING YOU NEED

In our Covenant Bible study last week, our class discussed Paul's prayer for the people of Ephesus (Ephesians 1: 15ff). He Sam's Picture asked, among other things, that the people might have some knowledge of the hope we have in Christ, the greatness of his power, and the "riches of his glorious inheritance." We got no further during the class than a discussion of the "riches" of our relationship to Christ and to the church. Can you think of some of those? Can you put into words the "riches" of your life in Him?

We spent some time on hope, agreeing that one who has hope believes that there is a future. When there is a future ahead of us, we can live life with anticipation and joy. We talked about love and we talked about peace, among other things.

We talked about faith and then, in another amazing example of how these things work together in the church, Wyman Pilcher brought by a church bulletin from 1971. My uncle, Bill Ruff, the Senior Minister of the church at that time, quoted Wyman's father, who was Chairperson of the Finance Committee. "Preacher, if you've got faith, you've got everything you need. If you haven't, anything you've got is no good." Of course, if anyone in the church knows anything about faith, it's the Chair of the Finance Committee!

Dr. Ruff recounted how our Wyman's grandfather, the original Wyman Pilcher, had died when Wyman's dad was a young fellow. His mother persevered through adversity, forever holding onto faith, and was able to implant the most solid of Christian virtues in her children. Ruff wrote that those children "will go on giving it away" and he was right! The Pilcher family legacy in our church and community is as solid as any that I know.

Faith, "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen," is, among other things, the knowledge and assurance that we are never outside God's umbrella of love and care. Regardless of circumstances ("...anything you've got..." ), regardless of our own feelings at the time, we are God's people and his grace is sufficient for every need.

Faith is one of the virtues that we seek and celebrate. We seek and celebrate every week here, and there is a place for you.

    I'll see you this Sunday.
