NOT "JUST THE CHICKEN SANDWICH"
Sad, surprising news this morning that Truett Cathy, the founder and face of Chick-fil-A, has died. Of course, he "...didn't invent the chicken, just the chicken sandwich," but he was an icon locally and in the national business scene. He was known for, among other things, good chicken sandwiches, for giving worlds of young people a chance at higher education (I understand that young employees in his stores could qualify for tuition assistance and many of us have benefitted from his WinShape program at Berry College), and also for closing his stores on Sunday. While most of us applaud that Sunday move, that of honoring the Sabbath, I'm sure many have shared my disappointment when driving into an empty Chick-fil-A lot on a Sunday afternoon. I read once an estimate of what he had "lost" by closing on Sunday, but I'm sure he considered the loss minor when compared to gaining his own soul.
He taught me a lesson in humility a few years ago when he was here. Before he spoke to a full Family Life Hall, I introduced myself as the Senior Minister and assured him that if I could be of service, to call on me. And he did! He handed me a handful of those "free sandwich" cards and instructed me to "put these out on the tables." I could not summon the courage to repeat that I was the SENIOR MINISTER OF THE CHURCH, so I dutifully handed out the cards. Washing the feet of others is often a transformational moment for us.
I offended some of his people once in Fayetteville. A new store opened there and they had brought in both some seasoned employees and some rookies for the grand opening. I wrote in an article that there was some confusion and standing around, problems that I was sure that fine business would correct, but warned that we could not repeat that same condition in the church. Some Chick-fil-A employees were offended and called me on my charge, and I think they were right. I wrote a letter of apology to Mr. Cathy and even took a big bouquet of flowers to that store on the next Saturday morning. I am told that the article was shown to Mr. Cathy who read it and commented, "Well, you can't please everybody." And so the little dog had barked and the caravan had passed on.
So Truett Cathy was a good man who ran a good business and made a wonderfully good contribution to our world. He has earned his rest and we commend him to Almighty God. And when I grow up, I want to be like him.
And I'll see you this Sunday.
