PREACHING AND THE MOVIES

The Oscar presentations are this week, but now comes the stunning news that you and I either do not see many movies or we do not know which ones we should see. We  havSam's Picturee poor taste and do not know greatness when it is thrust before us. The Chicago Tribune reports today that two-thirds of Americans have not seen ANY of the nine movies nominated for Best Picture.

I admit that I have seen only two of the nominees. I really liked "Gravity," partly because I came along in the beginning of the space age and cheered for Shepard, Grissom, Glenn, and the others. I tried "American Hustle" largely in the hope that Amy Adams would reprise her role as Clint Eastwood's daughter in "Trouble With the Curve." She did not and I left early. So I have seven more nominees to see before Sunday night and I'm not going to make it.

You and I know that the most highly regarded movies are not always the most economically successful. The technicians and professionals see their work in one way and the public sees it another. What we hear about other forms of art is probably true for cinema as well: "I don't know what art is, but I know what I like." The public has a mind of its own.

And amazingly, the same is true for the sermons that I deliver here each week. I've laughed with you before that sometimes I preach what I think is a good sermon. It begins and ends well, there is a consistent theme, it is theologically correct, and in reality should be printed in books of greatest sermons and young ministers should be forced to memorize it. And you walk out the door and say nothing about it. You ask about the Braves or the weather or my tie. And then there are times when I have prepared poorly, the illustrations don't fit, and I contradict myself theologically. I really want to hide and I promise that next week I'll prepare better, and you walk out the door with tears in your eyes, you thank me, and you ask me how I knew exactly what you needed to hear. It is in those moments that I am most aware of the mystery and wonder of preaching.

I am convinced after forty-plus years that somewhere between my lips and your ears, the work of God gets done. Somehow God's spirit fashions my efforts and the most effective sermons are not the ones that I think are so technically perfect, but are the ones that feed souls and affirm the presence of God. Somehow the soul knows what it needs. I promise you that I will always try to remember the connections among my preparation, your needs, and the Spirit of the living God.

And I'll see you this Sunday.
