Greetings!

Just in time for Valentine's Day this year, Mother Nature brought us three feet of snow. I think everyone in New England agrees that, to avoid disappointment,

we celebrate Valentine's Day for the whole month of February. (In case we needed an excuse to stay home and snuggle by the fireside...)

The good news is we have power, which means we can all stay in touch and continue to work on getting ready for our 2013 season, opening in May.

Having those two thoughts reminds me to ask you to stay in touch with Spruce Point Inn if you'd like to know what we're doing "off season" and what we have planned for welcoming you in the spring.

Spruce Point Inn is on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. We would be honored for you to share us with your friends. We've just revamped our Blog, too. They're the first places we post pictures and our latest news; so we invite you to join the conversation with a Like on Facebook.

We look forward to seeing you there, til we can see you again here at Spruce Point Inn.

Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day!

Best,

Family memories, made in Maine

(family gatherings at Spruce Point Inn)

SPI - August Cover MM

Generations of families have made Spruce Point Inn one of the best family resorts in Maine, and for good reason. Located in the postcard-perfect Maine coast town of Boothbay Harbor, the Inn helps families make lasting memories.

Winter school vacations are coming up in many parts of the country, so we thought this would be a good time to tell you about some of the new playground features we've added to the grounds here.

"Kid's Camp"

The water will always be the most alluring attraction of our location and the coast of Maine is a perennial family vacation favorite because of all the activities. Fresh ocean breeze, warm days with friends at the children's pool and of course "SPI Kid's Camp".

"SPI Smores"

So, our playground needs to stretch those images and imagination into play. We're adding several "beached" boats to the playground - a pirate ship, a small sailboat and a lobster boat - all child-safe replicas made of play-friendly cedar -- to connect kids' experiences on the waterfront and in Camp Lighthouse activities with their games.

In other family vacation news, we're also adding more seating and  picnic tables to the fire pit area we've made famous for our evening s'mores parties. Maybe this is the year to plan that family gathering here at Spruce Point Inn?

Savoring Spruce Point Inn
(from the desk of Chef's Stiles and Weinerth)

Here at Spruce Point Inn in Boothbay Harbor, Chef Peter Stiles and Mark Weinerth, have operated on a "farm to fork principle" from the beginning, sourcing the locally fished, farmed and gathered ingredients that they put on the menus in the Inn's 88, serving coastal Maine cuisine; Bogie's, the casual bistro; and Deck, the oceanfront café.

The entire team is on a never-ending quest to cultivate sources for the freshest day-boat fish and seafood, the sun-warmed fruit and vegetables, the artisanal cheeses, herbs and forest forage that say, seasonal "Maine!" at the first bite.

Midcoast Maine is the beneficiary of a cornucopia of retired/relocated professionals who have left banking or IT to go back to the land and Chef Stiles - who grew up on a farm in local Lincolnville, just up the road -- has built relationships with local farms and other food purveyors, sourcing ingredients like the fresh Aroostook beets and lavender-honey chevre from Tourmaline Hill Farm, greens from the hothouse built by a drummer from the band Phish and cheese from the State of Maine Cheese Company, a business created by a Manhattan banker in Rockland.

It's an exciting time to be in the restaurant business and especially exciting to be part of what's happening here.

Food & Wine Magazine came up with the idea of "Collaboration Nation" to describe chefs working with customers, vendors and each other to bring the best flavors and experiences to those who love food.
