Dear Friends,
Yes my fall newsletter is a bit late but I wanted to wait until after I returned from my African adventure to put it all together. I thought the "after the trip" news would be much more interesting than the "before the trip" news. In addition to my Africa trip I also recently returned from an exhibition in Dallas, Texas as well as painting four small pieces for the Almost Miniatures show in Lexington, Massachusetts. While all this was going on I was invited to exhibit my work for a year at a local Rockwood Nature Center in Chesterfield, Virginia.
Well I am super charged after being in Africa and I am bursting with compositional ideas and ready to start painting for the spring exhibitions! I hope everyone has had a great fall and that the holiday season brings you much joy and happiness.
Cheers! -Robert |

Fall 2012 re-cap...
This fall has been packed with events and travel! From Richmond, Virginia to Dallas, Texas over the Atlantic to my adventure in Tanzania, Africa. I have recapped the events and travel below.
Reference & Research trip
Tarangire National Park
Tanzania, Africa
Well... what an adventure, A truly life and career changing event! Africa has super charged me and I have ideas for compositions bursting out of my head. I have already composed a large 30x40 painting of three bull elephants and can't wait to start this new piece. The trip so great that I am already making plans to go back in October 2013.
I have not been able to find the words that describe how fantastic my trip was and don't know if I ever will, it was that powerful. Personally I found Africa and it's people just amazing, the wildlife was incredible! Within five minutes of first day in the park I noticed the difference in wildlife in the wild and those in captivity. It is truly like comparing a couch potato with a world class athlete, the animals muscle mass and demeanor are a night and day difference.
Already a huge fan of Elephants they are now my favorite mammal, in fact after seeing them in the wild I have a definite love for them. They have so much personality, grace and beauty that just awed me. At one point I was looking out across the landscape and was looking at roughly 300 Elephants!
Field sketch of a Bull Elephant.
Drawn in Tarangire National Park, Tanzania, Africa.
So much happened that I would love to share with you and I am working on that through postings on my blog capturing moments from each day as well as excerpts and field sketches from my sketchbook/journal. You can read the posts, see my field sketches and view the map of my daily travels by clicking on the links below. Please check back over the next few weeks as I finish up my Africa 2012 sketchbook postings.

My work hanging in the Irving Arts Center
The exhibit in Dallas was a huge success! The Irving Arts Center had a great exhibition space for The Gallery of Artists and welcomed us most graciously. The show was such a success that they have not only asked us back in 2013 but 2014 as well! Keep an eye out for a save the date email this summer.

A review from Lovetts Gallery...
"Weighted (Carolina Wren)," Oil on 1/2 prepared maple panel, 18 x 24
One of Caldwell's best works!
A Little Rusty
Robert Louis Caldwell doesn't paint anything he hasn't seen in person. "Every time he's been to the gallery, he goes out taking reference photos," says Jack.
In fact, he's been saving for a trip to Africa.
"Robert has been raising funds to take his trip to Tanzania in four or five weeks. He was hoping he would be able to raise enough funds to go for 14 days," says Jack.
"He had to shorten his trip. He's never been to Africa. That's a monumental trip for any wildlife artist. He was so committed to going that he shortened his trip so he could go no matter what.
"When he returns, he'll be working primarily on African safari paintings, because, again, he'll only paint what he's seen in person."
Until then, however, he's working on more local subjects. On a trip to Lovetts Gallery in 2010, he photographed a counter weight to an oil pumpjack. He was drawn to it, no doubt, because it was covered in rust, which happens to be one of his favorite subjects. (Read more)
