Reward Yourself Along the Way When Pursuing Agressive Goals
Sitting on a white sand beach under a palm tree, I gazed out into the ocean watching the sun rapidly sink into horizon as I reflected on the aggressive effort put in to get things done on short notice. Now here I was finally getting the chance to slow up a bit. There was a pianist behind me and a renowned vocalist about to sing. Little Palm Island was living up to its reputation as described to me by a former colleague as described to her by her parents. It was clearly one of the most fascinating experiences I had in a while. Although it was my first time there, the staff already knew my name and ushered me across the island to my table. There were a few other noteworthy items one of which was the island was minutes from the southernmost tip of the United States. The others were that this place was only accessible by private plane or vessel. Perhaps that's why I was caught off guard when a pretty little baby deer walked up out of nowhere and tried to take my warm dinner rolls. Since when can deer swim across the Atlantic?
Deer come to dinner but they're not for dinner @ Little Palm Island
It reminded me of the time I landed in Lihue, Hawaii and saw chickens roaming free all over the island. I'm not sure what storm blew these animals across the water but here they were. Of all the guests, I was the only one there not celebrating some sort of anniversary but that shouldn't be. I'm not pretending this place wasn't expensive but when we grind towards aggressive goals, I think it's important to give yourself a little reward along the way even if it's not some special occasion.
Why Was I Here?
Working on a home design project, I was trying to create the perfect rear decking. A former associate who clearly didn't understand what I was doing said, "I know you are not going all the way down there to see a deck." She didn't get it and I wasn't about to waste a lot of time trying to sell it. I couldn't quite translate what I was envisioning but I had seen it before in a magazine described as one of the most exotic homes built in 2010 but the issue was it was 930 miles away. I had just been informed it was going to be taken off the market in a number of hours and the business day was already over. I couldn't let the opportunity slip by so there I was with only one thing to do. Activate Guerilla Grind Mode.
Current time: 8 p.m.
Hours remaining: 20
Hours to destination: 16
Vehicle: Car
I took a 2 hour power nap and at 10 p.m. hit the road with my R Kelly This is the Life of a Go Getta! superhero theme music. The hours of 2- 6 am separates the men from the boys on the highway so I'll need Wale's Bait with super drum beats and the perpetual lyrics of Work! Work Work Work! in the dark of night. Upon arrival, I checked into my hotel grabbed my tools and went to work. With literally minutes to spare, I accomplished the mission as I ran into the new owner. Sitting out on the deck of this $22 million estate overlooking the Gulf of Mexico was worth it. It was hardly just a deck. It was a tri-level ocean front observatory lined with concrete balusters, water features, hardwood ceilings, travertine tiles and the like. After a night like this, anyone would deserve a nice break. These architectural features had created by conservative estimates a 7 figure net pay off from a property I conducted a fundamental investment analysis earlier so yes the trip was worth it.
At that point I realized I was 4.5 hours from Little Palm Island and figured if I had traveled this far, it would only make sense to take it to the limits of the land. I've watched people grind for success without taking a moment to breathe. If you're going to shoot for aggressive goals, ensure that you build in some rewards for yourself and here is why:
1) Nobody cares about what you do like you.
2) Sometimes you have to act fast and travel far on short notice. Aggressive goals are not always groupie friendly. Family and friends are immensely important but they may have to catch you next trip.
3) If people criticize you because they lack understanding, don't invest a lot of time trying to convert them. Aggressive goal setters have no time to carry dead weight.
4) Rewarding yourself periodically gives you much needed time to reflect on what could have been done better.
5) Don't burn yourself out., but if you don't live everyday like it's your last one day you'll wake up dead wrong!
My travels may sound fancy now in hindsight but there were no shortcuts in any of this. As I boarded the vessel headed back to the mainland, I was the sole passenger with the entire crew at my beckoning call. Gazing at the sky so far south, I witnessed the unobstructed, pollution free view which made the stars sparkle like diamonds. Well rested, I could now 86 the Biggest Boss That You've Seen This Far music and dawn the Sade Lover's Live. Facing the now 1200 mile 23 hour all uphill drive, I was well rested but I still had a long road back. I figured maybe I'd spot my dad 18 wheeling the interstate along the way. My drive had to come from somewhere but I'm the next generation which means air travel. Where is that Diamond DA-42 twin engine plane when I need it?
