Finding LOVE in what you do
Or find something ELSE to do

When your alarm goes off, signaling it is time to get ready for your day, do you groan, grumble and procrastinate?  When you are at work, do you count the minutes till you are done?

It is unreasonable to tell you to to quit what you are doing then, and find something you love.  Right?
Maybe not.

Since my first job, bagging groceries as a teen, I have loved what I did.  Did I love bagging the groceries necessarily? Uh..no, but I did love meeting and interacting with people.  From being the janitor at Circuit City, to the top salesperson there, to slinging pagers, to an Executive at a Fortune 100 company and business owner- I have always loved what I did and do.

Have I loved every aspect?
Not even.

But overall, I love what I do, because any other energy is a waste.  Let me say it again; negative energy is just a waste, unless of course you are going to do something about it.  If you hate your job so much that it consumes you, tears you down, wears on your family....then you really need to think long and hard about taking the step and seeking employment elsewhere.  Turn the negative energy into something positive. Do something, instead of expending the energy to complain, expend it to expand yourself, search and find love in what you do.

Here are a few keys to finding love, or finding something else:

Find your grateful spot
Every company, every job, every organization has something about it to be grateful for.  Everyone of them.  Whether it is free coffee, great benefits, fun perks, flexible hours, an employee discount, great co-workers, etc.  If you cannot find one thing, then yes, I am telling you to run for the hills.  I'd rather you live in the trees than work for an organization that doesn't have at least one thing to be grateful for.  However, most companies have not just one, but usually more than one (you just have to be open minded and push all the negative speak out of your head).  Right now, this minute, list those things about your organization/job that you are grateful for, other than your paycheck.  Put this list somewhere where you can refer to it frequently, especially on days when you feel overwhelmed, unhappy or stressed more than usual.

Find the love
Within your job, there is probably at least one aspect of it that you love.  Perhaps it is that you get to talk to people.  Maybe it is that you get to work in a cool/hip/fashion forward/technologically advanced/popular/you put a name on it place and you are personally interested in that aspect- even if it doesn't directly apply to your job.  It could be that you love being creative, even if the product itself doesn't excite you.  Think about the things that make you happy personally (fellowship, creativity, selling, outdoor adventure, fashionista, etc.) and see how you might be able to apply it to your job.

Know your value
So here's the thing; if you are unhappy, stressed and/or anxious about your job- other people can feel it.  It does reflect on who you are and where you will go.  Maybe you don't want to advance in your own organization, but perhaps while you were interacting with someone, during the course of your day to day activities, and they would love to hire you for your actual dream job, except you came across to them in such a negative manner (that fake smile doesn't cut it) that they decide not to even ask if you or someone you know may be interested in said dream job.  What you do matters.  No matter the title, pay or position.  It matters.  You are representing who you are by your actions.  You are setting examples to your children or loved ones and to those around you.  If you matter, then what you do and how you do it matters.  Take pride in that and know you are valuable-it shows in all aspects of your life.

I know the sayings 'do what you love and the money will follow', and 'life is too short' are overused; but the truth is-life is short.  It is incredibly short.  Sometimes, lives are shortened even more so because of stress, or unhappiness within a job.  You can control your own unhappiness.  No one makes you unhappy, you allow them to.  So take control of what you do- either find the love, or shake the fear and go find something else to love.  I have not yet met a person, who took the chance of leaving an incredibly unhealthy or toxic job, to find another job, that didn't thank themselves over and over again for taking the risk.  I believe in you- that you can find your grateful spot, find the love and know your own value.

I look forward to hearing about your future success!

Quote of the month
"Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it."
