Principal Points: April
"Spring" does seem to be here finally, and that means the AMHS community is racing toward graduation for the Class of 2016 on May 31, 2016 at 2:30 PM in the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. However, in our race there is one key hurdle with which we really need your help:
AP Exams: The AP Exams will begin Monday, May 2 and continue daily through Thursday, May 12. It is very important for each student taking an AP exam to be present and on time for school.
Once this hurdle has been successfully crossed, we will continue the race to graduation with a host of student academic experiences and events. The calendar is full, and I will continue to add to it as activities are planned.
May 2-12: AP Tests
May 13: AP Picnic with Battle of the Bands and King of
May 15: Senior Celebration at 3:00
(formerly called Baccalaureate)
May 16-20: EOC Tests (English I, Biology, and US History)
May 17-20: Senior Exams
May 23: Awards Assembly for AMHS students
May 24-27: Underclassmen Exams and Senior Trip
May 30: Memorial Day: Schools and Offices are closed.
May 31: Graduation 2:30 PM
Please make a note of all these events. We will keep you posted with details as each activity comes up, but I wanted everyone to have an idea of some of the key events that lie ahead. I encourage you to check the AMHS Website calendar and to call the office if you have a question about any activity.
Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to offer the best possible academic program we can.

News from Parent Boards
|
- Would you like to be part of making the school days better for the staff and students of AMHS?
- Would you like to get to know AMHS a little better?
- Would you like to be a part of helping us keep our place as one of the top 10 high schools in the nation?
If you answered "Yes" to any of the above, please consider joining the PIE Board for the 2016-17 school year.
PIE (Partners in Education) is a vibrant, engaged parent organization. Most of us work "regular jobs" as well as filling our volunteer roles for Magnet. Meetings are held monthly, the dates and times of which will be determined by the incoming Board.
We have an Executive Board which will be elected in the coming weeks, which consists of President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and a Member-at-Large. There are also numerous committees which will require chairpersons to help coordinate PIE's various activities, including Staff Appreciation, A/B Honor Roll, Office Volunteers, International Dinner, Auction/Gala, Student Volunteer Opportunities, Grocery Store Partnerships, and more.
Please submit your nominations (Yes, you can nominate yourself!) to Anne Walpole (PIE Secretary, and Nominating Committee Chair) at anne@abbapoolaturf.com . If you have ANY questions about any of the positions, please contact Kelly Yost at amhspie@gmail.com .
AMHS Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week May 16th - May 20th
We need your help!
AMHS PIE will be sponsoring Teacher Appreciation Week in May and we need your help to make it successful! We need gift cards by Wednesday, May 11th for a teacher give away. Please place gift cards in an envelope labeled "Teacher Appreciation" and turn in to the school office. We hope that each family can send in one $10 or $20 gift card to a place that they frequent or enjoy. Anything from your favorite restaurant, yogurt shop, coffee shop, movie theater, gift shop, etc. Anything that is FUN for you will be enjoyed by one of our teachers! You are always welcome to add a little note to the card to say thanks and who the donor is.
Our teachers and staff work so hard for our students - please help us show them our appreciation. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Winters at tswinters@hotmail.com.

AMHS Night at the RiverdogsPlease join PIE for a fun filled evening at the RiverDogs game on Friday, May 20th at Joe Riley Stadium. The fun will begin outside the gates where our own AMHS Dirty Birds will be performing.
Gates open at 6:00 with game time at 7:05. Group tickets can be purchased for $8 through the group portal at http://cr1.glitnirticketing.com/crticket/web/gpcaptcha.php. Use the password AMHS16. Stick around after the game for the Fireworks display when our Seniors will be out on the field. Hope to see you all at the ball game! (Seniors do not need to purchase advance tickets. They should listen for school announcements on how to sign up for their game tickets.)
AP Chemistry Project - Donations Needed
Each year after the AP Chemistry Exam I have my students work on a project of their choice and this year they have expressed interest in creating an 'outdoor' classroom underneath the 'old-oak tree' here on campus. (Typically we choose a chemistry related project to do in the lab but this group really wants to build something!) I am seeking donations of Lowe's or Home Depot gift cards so we may purchase materials to construct benches, protective posts, a white-board, etc. for this outdoor classroom! Gift cards can be sent to school to the attention of Murray Eicher. Thanks, Murray Eicher

Community Service Opportunities

Soldier's Angels -- Ongoing
Soldier's Angels is a national charity which provides aid and comfort to those who have served in our armed forces and their families. Our organization offers many volunteer opportunities that allow thousands of volunteers to work tirelessly and assist veterans in a variety of exclusive and effective ways.
We are currently recruiting volunteers to work with our veterans within the Ralph A. Johnson Center as Patient Visitors. Our Patient Visitors will provide support to veterans within the hospital through approved visitations and distribution of donated materials. We will work with your students to establish a schedule that allows them to visit the hospital for only a few hours each week, or during one of the special events we will be hosting this year. Students will be responsible for maintaining a log of their hours.
