10) Can I buy tickets at the door?
You can but they cost a lot more. Save yourself some cash and buy now online at
 
9) What instrument will Mr. Phillips be playing?
Saxophone
 
8) Who are the Hot City jazz dancers?
They are a group of dancers who specialize in swing type dances (costumes and all) who may just pull you onto the dance floor!

7) Who is catering?
No caterers! We were fortunate to get donations from Swig and Swine, Home Grown Hospitality, Triangle, Which cream and Publix.


6) Do I have to dress in 20s attire?
No. Cocktail attire is fine, but some of us will have our flapper best on!
 
5) How can I contribute if I can't attend?
Donate a bottle of wine ($25 value or more) for the wine wall. (Can't have a wine wall without wine...) Have an adult bring it to volunteer desk at school this week, or bring it by Founder's Hall on Friday after 9 a.m.
 
4) What is a wine wall?
A special raffle where you buy a $25 ticket and you are guaranteed to win either: a bottle of wine of at least $25 dollar value or one of two special wine related prizes valued at $100 each!
 
3) How do I deliver the wine?
Have an adult bring it to volunteer desk at school or bring it by Founder's Hall on Friday after 9:00 am.
 
2) What can I win in auctions?
Lots of great stuff but just to entice you...Adele tickets, Lunch with the mayor, seats at graduation, a prime parking spot, a grill, an axe...

Pi Day Celebration - March
10-14, 2016     
Come to the Dark Side. We have Pi. 

Pi Day is upon us!  Academic Magnet High School will celebrate Pi Day this year on beginning on Thursday, March 10th and culminating with an extended lunch and live music on Monday, March 14th.  Every student participates in Pi Day which includes a poster contest, poetry writing, music, costumes, pie sales, plus much more.

How can you help? We need donations of gift cards (iTunes, Starbucks, etc.), puzzles, or interesting small gifts for prizes for our contest winners. We also need donations of whole pies to sell at lunch on Monday, March 14th.   

Parents who would like to attend the Monday celebration and help slice and sell pie.
Mu Alpha Theta, the math honorary society, sponsors Pi Day in cooperation with the AMHS Math department.All proceeds from this event support the Math Team's competitions throughout the school year.

2016 Prom - April 16, 2016

Love is in the air! The AMHS prom committee has started planning for prom, and needs your help! The following items are needed to make this year's Midsummer Night's Dream a reality!  Please leave your donations in the large envelope at the welcome desk marked "Prom 2016".   You can also give your gift cards to Ms. Henley or Ms. Orr.   Thanks so much for making this evening special.

Make sure to mark your calendars! This year's Prom will be held at Founder's Hall at Charlestowne Landing (Free Parking!) Tickets will go on sale April 4, and will be $35/single or $65/couple.
 
As you are preparing for this grand event, we would like you to be aware of formal dress code for a Charleston County School District event!

Dress Standards for Young Men: 
  • Dress shirt  (exception: tuxedo shirt with a decorative button).
  • Shirts must remain on for the entire dance.     Dress pants (no jeans).  
  • Jackets are desired, but optional.
  • See-through material which exposes thighs, excessive cleavage, or midriff is not permitted.
Dress Standards for Young Women:  
  • Dresses must be no shorter than fingertip length.
  • Bare midriffs and plunging necklines are not allowed.  
  • Backs may not be lower than the natural waistline.
  • See-through material which exposes thighs, excessive cleavage, or midriff is not permitted.
  • Slits may not be longer than fingertip length.
  • Pantsuits must be of a formal nature (no jeans).
Footwear:
  • Footwear is expected of all and must be kept on at all times for health department reasons.  Flip-flops, slippers and tennis shoes are not allowed.

There will be additional activities in the weeks ahead, and the testing season is extremely busy and demanding, but it is part of our program, and the students will be well-prepared for each test. Thesis Mentor Appreciation Event

The AMHS Foundation is hosting a " Thesis Mentor Appreciation Event" and would like to get input from as many  students and alumni as possible. First and foremost, we would like to  extend an invitation to as many mentors as possible.   As such, we need the names of mentors, please send an email to academicmagnetfoundation@gmail.com with the name of your mentor and their email or physical mailing address.

We would also love to hear from you regarding your mentor and what made he/she great? Please send an email or go the AMHS Foundation Facebook page and share who your mentor was, when you did your thesis  and why your mentor was so great.

 Parents, if you are sharing on behalf of your student or alumni, please indicate that you are a parent who appreciates their child's mentor. We look forward to hearing about some of the many amazing people who have served as mentors for our current students and our alumni.  We thank you in advance for your time and support.

Science Club Competes

On Saturday, February 27, the Science Club traveled to Newberry College to compete in the South Carolina Science Olympiad. Although they couldn't pull off a win this year, they came in a very hard-fought second place, beating third place by twice as many points.

Distinguished Young Women of Charleston

On March 6, 2016, three juniors from Academic Magnet competed in the Distinguished Young Women of Charleston County Showcase.  Distinguished Young Women of Charleston County is part of a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent in young women.  Pictured here are Amelia Sizemore, Angel Legare, and Samantha Moody from AMHS, along with a fellow competitor from BE.  Amelia, Angel, and Samantha were each awarded scholarships for different categories in the competition.   Angel and Samantha were named the Distinguished Young Women of Charleston County and will participate in the statewide showcase in Lexington, SC in July.

Community Service Opportunities

Walk for Water - March 12, 2016

The tenth annual Walk for Water will be held on March 12, 2016 at the "Joe" Stadium in downtown Charleston. The walk  begins at 10:10am in honor of our 10th year anniversary but the time for a volunteer differs depending on the area the student is serving in. We are expecting over 5,000 walkers and are still in need of many volunteers in the areas of Greeters/Trash Pick /T-shirt runners/Clean up volunteers/Flag Holders and the list goes on. Please let them know as soon as possible as time is short and many more hands are needed. They would love to have parents and faculty as well!!!!


KidsFair - March 20, 2016

Volunteers Needed For the 28th Annual KidsFair Sunday March 20, 2016 at Burke High School from 10:00-4:00pm.
 
KidsFair is a unique community event that is a celebration of and for children from throughout the LowCountry.
 
Kidsfair is presented the Charleston Jewish Community Center With Out Walls in partnership with the City of Charleston and CCSD.
 
Throughout the day children will be educated, entertained and have a myriad of hands on experiences. Student volunteers are needed to:
  • Dress up in costume
  • Circulate Information
  • Assist with logistics
  • Work in the food booth
  • Assist in the outdoor zones such as the sports arena
  • Promote Stage Acts
  • Work in sponsor booths
  • Greet Kids and their parents
 
All volunteers will receive credit for the hours they work and will be fed as well. There is no minimum amount of time required for volunteers. For more information or to volunteer please contact, Carol Berlin carolberlin@att.net or call 843-568-4450.

Walk for Autism Charleston - April 16, 2016

Walk For Autism Charleston is looking for volunteers to assist at our annual walk event held at Hampton Park on Saturday April 16 . Volunteers are needed for many tasks such as supervising jump castles, setting up an auction table and assisting at the table, supervising food stations and game activities. There is also a need for help setting up tables and tents along with breaking down at the end of the event. Volunteers can plan to arrive as early as 7:30 am if assisting with set up and if just planning on working a station arriving between 8 and 8:30 am the day will end with clean up tasks ending between 1:00 and 1:30 pm. Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge

If anyone is looking for ideas for their community service and enjoy the outdoors, the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge has some opportunities for you.

Volunteers are needed to replace and re-plant the butterfly garden.  This will need to take place by early spring.  They also need volunteers to refurbish the benches, picnic tables, and some fences around the refuge.  This would require sanding, replacing boards, and painting.

Students can put in their hours during the weekend, so no need to miss school!

Reading Partners 
Reading Partners is looking for volunteers with their program.  The minimum age requirement is 14 years old.   Sanders-Clyde Elementary (805 Morrison Drive) has after-school sessions from 3:30-4:15pm, Monday-Thursday.  Orientation and training session must be attended in order to volunteer. The different dates and locations available for the training sessions are: Wednesday, 2/3 downtown Charleston County Library; 10:30am-12:00pm; Monday, 2/10 North Charleston City Hall; 5:30-7:00pm.  If you have any questions, and if you are available for any of the training sessions, please contact Jen at jennifer.hostetler@readingpartners.org.


Greenhill Community Center Mentors

Volunteers needed to provide  homework help and mentoring to elementary and middle school aged children at  Greenhill Community Center, 707 York St. off Mathis Ferry Rd. in Mt. Pleasant.   Hours after school until 5:30 or 6:00 Monday through Thursday. Commitment needed... a minimum of one afternoon per week, or every other week. This center is operated by the Town of Mt.
