Principal Points
Second Semester already! The school year is flying by... on a fast track to graduation on May 31, 2016, and we are looking forward to completing Senior Thesis presentations, college acceptances, and the admissions' season.
We started our new semester with an all-school assembly, and our guest speaker was Dr. Gerrita Postlewait, Superintendent of Charleston County School District. She spoke to our students about the challenge of leadership, and she complimented them of the work they are already doing within the community. It was a positive and purposeful opening of the new semester for our entire community.
The admissions' season for AMHS opened officially on January 9, 2016, and we are now if full swing of confirming student registrations for MAP testing and Writing Sample sessions:
January 30, February 1 and February 6: MAP Testing at AMHS for all non-CCSD applicants. The testing will begin at 9:00 AM; all applicants must be at the site by 8:30 AM.
February 4, 2016: All applicants will take the Writing Sample. CCSD students will take it at their home school at 9:00 AM; all non-CCSD students will take it at 4:00 PM at AMHS.
Late February, 2016: All applicants will receive notification of the status of their application: Accepted, Waiting List, Not Eligible for Admission.
While every day at AMHS is exciting and dynamic, this week is especially energetic with Coming Home activities, a pep rally on Friday, and the basketball game/Senior Night Friday evening.
The semester also holds two important community events: The Gala is set for March 11, and it is always a special night. Please set aside the date and go online for tickets. The Academic Magnet Foundation will be hosting a inaugural event early in April; please "stay tuned" for details. It promises to be a very exciting time for our entire educational community and Charleston as well.
Thank you for your continuing support as AMHS moves ahead into the season of college decisions, final thesis presentations, IGP's and plans for the future. If we can help with anything, please call us at 746-1300.
It's time to purchase your 2015-2016 yearbook! Order online at
to purchase your yearbook now.
Speaking of Yearbooks... Don't Forget the Ads!
Time is running out to purchase a business or parent ad
-- and the Yearbook staff needs your help! This year, our ad sales are below projections, which means we'll be making difficult decisions in the next few weeks if we don't increase our ad sales revenue. Please consider supporting AMHS through either a business or personal ad. Creating an ad is easy: You can create your ad online by visiting www.jostens.com or the Yearbook staff can create the ad for you. Sponsorship opportunities are also available! Thanks for your support and please contact Larissa Bortz with questions.
Final Deadline: January 29, 2016
Seniors with STEM Theses!!
If a senior or another student has done a thesis in a STEM field, there are two upcoming competitions for them. The Lowcountry Science Fair is on April 5, and the South Carolina Junior Academy of Science competition is on April 16. If a senior received an HHMI grant, they must present their research at one of these competitions. Both competitions offer cash prizes, scholarships, and trips to Nationals for the winners. The deadline to submit your materials is February 19. Please contact Ms. Metzner-Roop (
