School News

Principal Points: November 2015

The second term has gotten off to a fast and furious start as judith we head into the season of Senior Thesis presentations and the holidays. AMHS has much to be proud of in the academic realm, on the athletic field, in the arts, and in our community.

Academic Accomplishments:
  • 18 National Merit Semi-Finalists
  • 75 Palmetto Fellows Candidates
  • 30 Students from AMHS and SOA participated in a special workshop sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League. The workshop centered on building peer leaders for developing and implementing programs in the school which help us all to better understand each other. This is a natural follow-up to the program presented by Dr. Rupert Nacoste at AMHS in January.
On the Athletic Field:
  • Boys X Country Team is the AA Boys State Champions with 1stPlace Winner: Hayden DiBona
  • Girls X Country Team placed 3rd in the AA Girls State Championship with State Runner-up: Kate Kuisel.
  • AMHS Girls Competitive Cheer Team was the first place winner in all three of its competitions this Fall.
  • Raptor Football: Following an exciting win over Garrett on Friday night, the team is headed to Marion to play Marion High School this Friday. Go Raptors!!
Arts and AMHS:
  • "Y'all Fest:" students will work with publishing writers (EK Johnston in a writer's workshop, November 13, 2015.
  • AMHS students continue their work at the Halsey Institute. Mr. Junius Wright has established an important working/learning experience with the institute, and the students have enjoyed it. This year they are working with Mr. Lonnie Hampton, whose work involves building art around ordinary objects.
AMHS and the Community:
  • Bonds-Wilson Reading Room: On Friday, October 30, 2015 Bonds-Wilson Alumni gathered in the RoseMaree Myers Theater to hear of the installation of the Bonds-Wilson Reading Room in the Media Center. The room, an Eagle Scout project for William Pugh, is a comfortable place to read, to meet, and to reflect on the past accomplishments of students at Bonds-Wilson High School, which was located on this campus until 1985. NFL player and coach, Art Shell, a graduate of Bonds-Wilson High School was the featured speaker. It was an exceptional day for everyone.
  • Honduras School Support: On Friday, November 6th, the AMHS Student Council sponsored BuffPuff Volleyball in an effort to raise funds for a kindergarten building in El Sauce, Honduras. The money raised will help complete a major renovation on the school. AMHS has been connected to this school through the Senior Thesis project of Anne Rodgers, who worked this summer at the school and whose work centers on education for girls in this small underdeveloped nation. The event was great fun for a good cause and a special close to the week.
Thank you for your continuing support as AMHS moves ahead into the season of college applications, thesis presentations, and the holiday activities. If we can help with anything, please call us at 746-1300.

Ongoing

South Carolina Competes is geared primarily toward providing educational opportunities for students across the socioeconomic spectrum.  We have two major initiatives, and will be starting at least one more in the coming weeks.  These initiatives allow students to choose to either volunteer in a continuing project, or to volunteer for various one-time events.

Our FARE Play (Fantasy Athletics Real Education) initiative is a fantasy sport league where student volunteer mentors engage middle and elementary students in mathematics tutoring through sports statistics.

Our ACE (Athletes' Cooperative Education) initiative creates volunteer opportunities for student athletes from differing socioeconomic backgrounds to work together and engage in conversations about their differing perspectives.

For more information on South Carolina Competes, please contact them at sccompetes@gmail.com .
