Principal Points: October
It is hard to believe that the first term is coming to a close, and report cards will be issued Monday, October 26th. The term has been an active one for AMHS with Homecoming, exciting football games, PSAT Testing, Powder Puff Football, Senior Seminar, International Dinner, and the arrival of two new colleagues: Ms. Meredith Petty has assumed the teaching responsibilities for Global I and Global II, and Ms. Celeste Bearden will be here Mondays and Fridays as a member of our guidance department. We are really pleased to have both educators join in our work at AMHS.
The Senior Seminar, organized by Ms. Stephanie Hunt and facilitated by Ms. Nina Sossamon-Pogue, both parents of AMHS students, was extremely successful. The panel discussion held Wednesday, October 14th centered on personal and professional ethics and making tough decisions. Members of the panel included Bert Keller, a former ethics professor, Adam Parker, journalist, Thibaut Fagonde, filmmaker, Katie Zimmerman, environmental advocate, Jennet Robinson Alterman, former president of the Center for Women, Whitney Powers, architect and founder of If You Were Mayor, and Marcus Amaker, poet and graphic designer. It was an impressive panel, and the morning provoked deep thinking about issues that affect us as a community, nation and world.
The International Dinner, sponsored by PIE, was held Saturday, October 17th, and it was a wonderful event. The food was delicious, the music was excellent, and the opportunity for the AMHS community to celebrate its diversity and send of community was special for all who attended. Special thanks to Ms. Simone Howe and her committee for a memorable evening.
Other Coming Attractions:
Early Dismissal: Wednesday, October 28th will be an early dismissal at 1:15 PM.
Make-up Days: The following days will be full school days to make-up for the days lost to the heavy rains and flooding: Friday, October 23rd, Tuesday, November 3rd, and Friday, March 25th.
Graduation: Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2016 will take place May 31, 2016 at 2:30 PM at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center.
Again, we are closing in on the first term of the school year and look forward to serving you and your student as best we can. Thank you for your continuing support!

These diseases affect 1.6 million Americans, including 80,000 children. Walk with us in 2015 and help us get one step closer to cures. Our Take Steps walks offer a wonderful day for family, friends and the community to celebrate all of the efforts that have been put forth in raising funds towards our mission to find cures for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.. Our walk day is filled with music, food, kids' entertainment, educational information and fun.
Join us on November 1st at James Island County Park. Registration begins at 2:00. You can volunteer to walk and raise funds and awareness today at http://cctakesteps.org/charleston or volunteer to assist on event day by emailing hbuchanan@ccfa.org.
November 8 - MDA Muscle Walk
Please help support one of our own and the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the MDA Muscle Walk at the RiverDogs stadium on Sunday, November 8th from 11am-2pm. Caleb Sizemore, an Academic Magnet 2015 graduate, has organized a Muscle Walk team to help raise funds for MDA research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (the disease which affects him) and to raise awareness of the impact of neuromuscular diseases on so many individuals and families. Please come join Caleb, friends, family, and dozens of other teams in the non-competitive walk around the stadium to support those with muscle diseases.
MDA is a voluntary health agency that funds cutting-edge neuromuscular disease research; ensures that all Americans affected by these diseases receive treatment and critical care; and serves as a voice for families with neuromuscular diseases. MDA has built the nation's only neuromuscular clinic network, with over 200 MDA clinics, which provides expert treatment for those with neuromuscular diseases. MDA also provides free summer camps designed specifically for kids with muscle diseases.
Academic Magnet has raised almost $1,700 for the Caleb's Muscle Walk team this year, and the total raised so far this year for Caleb's team is $6,300. Those funds are designated for research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy cures and treatments. You can donate to his team at this link: Caleb's Cure. Please join us at the Muscle Walk! Just show up at the stadium at 11a.m. on Sunday, Nov 8th, and we will do the quick registration stuff, and you will join up with Caleb and his team and participate in the walk around and in the stadium. Lunch and lots of other fun activities are included. Help us to Make a Muscle and Make a Difference.
