Science Club Competes in National Science Olympiad in Lincoln, NE |
The science club traveled to University of Nebraska, Lincoln, to compete in the National Science Olympiad May 15 and 16. This is the first time our school has ever competed at Nationals, defeating the long-time South Carolina champion to get there. Our highest placement was Fanny Cheung and Aidan Gomez, who came in SEVENTH in the Nation competing in "Write It, Do It", where one person on the team describes an object and the other, without looking at the object, has to re-create it. They came in just out of medal contention.
The seniors on this team have been competing for four years to get where they are. Time ran out at the school's awards ceremony to recognize them all - but without the help of Timothy Corder, Leotie Hakkila, Steven Lu, Kilbey McCormick, Vaibhav Mohanty, Zoe Norris, and Alex Rovner, the team would never have made it to Nationals. A special thanks also goes out to Jamisen Collier, who has been on the team for three years but is moving and won't be with us to compete next year. The rest of the team looks forward to a repeat performance in 2016!

The Student Perspective...
by Jennie Schaaf
|
During this time of the year, with most students living from one exam to another, getting brief glimpses of summer weather and freedom at lunch, it can be easy to become caught up in the buzz of work and wrapping up projects. For students and teachers, these last several weeks are the final hurdle before a summer reprieve between years of school. Most students will be gearing up for another year at Magnet, completing dozens of pages of summer reading, but the senior class will be preparing for the next chapter in their lives.
I will be sad to leave behind picnics in the courtyard, English classes in the senior lounge, teachers gathering to talk in between classes, and some of the fantastic lessons I learned, both academically and socially. However, I am also ready to finally be done with AP exams, with getting hall passes, and with making the commute to school so early in the morning. The next few years are bound to be filled with changes, whether you are a student completing high school and entering college, a teacher handling a new batch of students, or a parent experiencing high school again through a student's eyes, but that can all wait until after summer!

The 2014/2015 School Year:
It's a Wrap!
|
This is my last issue as Raptor Report editor, and I would like to take this opportunity to say what a wonderful experience it has been. It afforded me the opportunity to get to know a group of dedicated parents, amazing students, and inspiring faculty and staff. Working together, we have shared and celebrated the experiences of our educational community in it's pursuit of academic excellence and personal growth. It has been a privilege and pleasure to be a part of the AMHS community, and I will truly miss it.
Next year, Liz Boyles will be assuming the editor's duties. Please contact her with your Raptor Report submissions at raptorreporteditor@gmail.com I wish everyone a happy, safe summer, and a successful 2015-2016 school year!

Athens and the Islands...
AMHS Spring Break 2016
|

Trace the path of Ancient History! Experience the Acropolis, Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon, Santorini, Patmos, Crete, Rhodes, and Ephesus.
We have slightly revised the trip for Spring Break 2016. With consideration for getting the best value for our money without missing too much school, we are offering a 10-day trip to Greece and Turkey.
We offered a trip to Greece a few years ago, and it was a great success, particularly the islands! Please take a look at the itinerary online or send me an email if you would like a hard copy. You can also pick up information in my room or in Mr. McCormick's. If you would like to register for the trip, please go to www.eftours.com, then type in the tour number 1668155KK. The total price is detailed for you on line. You can sign up for the trip with a $95 deposit. When you sign up on line, you can choose to pay the company monthly or pay in full, 90 days before departure.
The earlier you sign up the less the monthly payment! We have also included 2 extra activities in the price - a Greek cooking class and a Greek Evening with food and music.

PIE Update |
The time has come to say farewell to the 2014-2015 PIE Board and I would like to award a "Gilded Feather Award" to the following amazing, "graduating" members who have given their time, talent and treasure to AMHS for the past year:
Robyn Bradley, has served on the PIE Board throughout her three children's time here at Magnet. I can tell you that she probably knows the name of every single student who has attended Magnet for the past 12 years because she puts the DIRECTORY together...practically by memory! Students particularly love Robyn, because she also runs the Ice Cream Social for the A/B Honor roll students. Robyn will be missed by all of us as her last child, Gwyneth, heads off to UVA next Fall.
Brenda Rindge has also been on the Board through three Magnet students (four children total)...she has done it all, Vice President, Member at Large, several committee positions and culminating as our Secretary. We can all keep up with Brenda in the future, by reading the Post and Courier and looking for her bylines. Their oldest, Brianna, just received her Master's Degree from Georgia Tech, then Nick got married two weeks ago, and now her last child to graduate is Cassidy, who is off to swim for Converse College. Rapid change is her middle name...we will miss her smiling face.
Cammie Camp, is yet another mom of three students who have all attended Magnet. The teachers and staff are REALLY going to be grieving the loss of Cammie, because she has faithfully managed to shower them with wonderful gifts of Appreciation from Pie (and, of course, our wonderful parents who donate throughout the year and help in HUGE ways to give thanks to our AMHS staff). She has been grooming her replacements carefully (Sarah Winters and me) with lists and notes and boxes of things...but we will feel her loss deeply. Her son Chris will be off to Duke in the Fall.
Last of our "graduating" Board members but certainly not least, is our amazing, talented and thoughtful Raptor Report Editor, Cathy Cocolas (who better not edit this section out!). Cathy dived into the task of Raptor Editor two years ago with her pen blazing...she has managed many an edition, crafted many a paragraph, photo shopped hundreds of poorly taken pictures (oops, some of those were mine) and basically gotten the Raptor our single handedly for the past two years. Cathy's daughter, Lexi, will attend the Clemson Honors College and is starting her College success early with the Eureka program this summer. Cathy will be missed by all who faithfully read the Raptor!
I have enjoyed serving with the best PIE Board that ever sat in the Conference Room. All the members were faithful to the task of stewardship and leadership for the AMHS parent support groups. It was my honor to be President for the past two years, and I am excited for the future under the leadership of our current Vice President, Kelly Yost.
Have a great Summer, I'll see many of you around the parking lot, halls and sporting fields!
Christen Hall, PIE President
