AMHS Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is April 20 - 24th and we need more help...
|
Thank you to all who signed up over the past 2 weeks. We still need more gift cards for the give away!
We need gift cards by Monday, April 20th. For this give-away, we hope that each family can send in one $10 or $20 gift card to a place that they frequent or enjoy...anything from your favorite restaurant, yogurt shop, coffee shop, movie theater, gift shop, etc. Anything that is FUN for you will be enjoyed by one of our teachers. You are always welcome to add a little note to the card to say thanks and who the donor is.
Details: Food/donations for the luncheon can be dropped off by students to the downstairs break room, or by parents at the front desk or at the bus loop(after buses leave), anytime before noon on the 21st. Please label dishes to be picked up by students or parents later that day or in the week.
Gift cards should be addressed to "Ms. Linnie Duckett for Teacher Appreciation" and dropped off in her office.
Looking forward to a great week!
Thank you,

Ann Rodgers' Coloring Books for Honduras: Donate to Empower Students in Poverty |
By Mary Peyton Brown
Junior Anne Rodgers wants all girls to have the same opportunities she does. This dream is what inspired her to focus her thesis on creating a coloring book for schoolchildren in Honduras, where 46% of children never finish primary school.
Only 3 out of 10 Honduran children have access to secondary education. Even if they're close enough to attend school, there's still an average of a four-hour walk for children in a rural village of Honduras to reach a secondary school. But, children often leave school at the age of 13 to work in the fields. In other cases, girls of this age leave due to early marriage and are often pregnant within the year. Clearly, obtaining an education is a struggle for the 60.2% of Hondurans that live below the poverty line. This is where junior Anne Rodgers comes in.
Anne wanted all girls to have the same opportunities she does. This dream is what inspired her to focus her thesis on creating a coloring book for schoolchildren in Honduras, where 46% of children never finish primary school.
Here's what Anne had to say about her inspiring project:
I am studying gender discrimination and empowerment in education, specifically what factors inhibit girls from attending school. Through research, I found poor, rural schools in Honduras. This summer, I am going to Honduras to teach students in these schools about gender equality and the importance of staying in school. These schools are so run down that the children do not have books and basic supplies, and the facilities are so run down that many schools are one room with dirt floors no toilets, desks, anything. I am fundraising money in order to pay for travel expenses to Honduras as well as money to buy books and classroom supplies for the children. ALL donations are needed and helpful, these books and supplies we raise will likely be the only books the children have throughout their childhood. I am going to schools in Marcala, La Florida, and El Sauce. In addition, I am making 300 coloring books to serve as an educational tool to use to open the discussion about the benefits of staying in school with the students. It is going to be a fun way to educate students about the power of education!
Click here to donate, or donations can be given to either Anne Rodgers or Mrs. Merriman. Donations will be used for travel fees to Honduras, coloring book publication, as well as other books for the children.

Trace the path of Ancient History! Experience the Acropolis, Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon, Santorini, Patmos, Crete, Rhodes, and Ephesus.
We have slightly revised the trip for Spring Break 2016. With consideration for getting the best value for our money without missing too much school, we are offering a 10-day trip to Greece and Turkey.
We offered a trip to Greece a few years ago, and it was a great success, particularly the islands! Please take a look at the itinerary online or send me an email if you would like a hard copy. You can also pick up information in my room or in Mr. McCormick's. If you would like to register for the trip, please go to www.eftours.com, then type in the tour number 1668155KK. The total price is detailed for you on line. You can sign up for the trip with a $95 deposit. When you sign up on line, you can choose to pay the company monthly or pay in full, 90 days before departure.
The earlier you sign up the less the monthly payment! We have also included 2 extra activities in the price - a Greek cooking class and a Greek Evening with food and music.

Dear AMHS Community,
As this school year ends there is excitement for graduation and enthusiasm for the next school year. The 4 support groups for AMHS have been working diligently and thoughtfully on the upcoming school year 2015-16. Our goal is to have a Strategic Plan involving all 4 Support Groups for the upcoming year by June 2015. To make this happen our children's school will need parent and community volunteers for AMHS success. Please review the list below and contact any or all of the support group leaders to volunteer your time, money, ideas, and/or talent. Whether you have volunteered before, or if you are an incoming Freshmen family, please take the time to volunteer now, so AMHS will be ahead of the curve at registration for 2015-16.

4. CCSD Interrogation Policy- SIC is pleased with the new policy recommended by committee to the School Board for all of CCSD. The School Board will need to have 2 readings of the final document to make it the new policy.

4/25 7:15-10:30 Sullivans Island station 16
This is the 6th year for the Run for Adela to keep the memory of Adela Holmes Cook. The race is planned and coordinated by her closest friends and family in her memory. We have raised over $100K in Adela's name.
With the funds from the past 5 races, we have established the Adela Holmes Cook Foundation which has supported Camp Happy Days, Charleston Waterkeeper, and starting this year, Meeting Street Academy.
With her Foundation, we have built a legacy for Adela. We have been blessed to give teens with cancer new experiences to many of the activities Adela enjoyed through Adela's Extreme Teen Water Weekend.
Volunteers for the Run for Adela make ALL of this possible. They are crucial to the organization and success of race day and we are grateful to have them keep coming back year after year.
Volunteers should meet at 7:15am at Station 16 (grass field at the top of the beach entrance, look for volunteer tent) and will wrap up about 10:30am. Contact Lauren Cook for more information.

The Clean Cities Sweep is an upcoming volunteer opportunity for anyone who doesn't mind getting their hands (and feet, clothes, etc.) dirty while enjoying the great outdoors and having a positive impact on the environment:
"Clean Cities Sweep is a series of events hosted by various community, schools, business, and family groups in Charleston and North Charleston. Groups range in size from just 2 people to 100. All groups are given trash bags, gloves, pickup sticks, and other supplies, as available, to help make their project a reality. If groups do not have a project in mind then Keep Charleston Beautiful helps match them with areas in need of litter cleanups. Projects normally last 2-3 hours depending on what the group chooses to do.
To find out more information, please visit: Keep Charleston Beautiful or Clean Cities Sweep Flyer
Click here to get details about these events and additional opportunities.
If you choose to participate in a community service project, remember to take the Community Service Project form and have the event sponsor sign it for you.
If you know of an opportunity that needs to be added to the list, forward that information to Becky and John Dornisch
amhs.volunteer@dornisch.org.
