THE RAPTOR REPORT

Principal Points: April

judith"Spring" does seem to be here finally, and that means the AMHS community is racing toward graduation for the Class of 2015 on June 3, 2015 at 2:30 PM in the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. However, in our race are two key hurdles with which we really need your help:

  • ACT/Aspire Testing: ACT, ACT Workkeys, and ACT Aspire are the state's tests assessing academic skills and are required for every student in Grades 9, 10, and 11. The testing will take place April 28 and 29, and we need every student to be present for the testing.
  • Final Exams: In compliance with the CCSD exam policy, all students in Grades 9, 10, and 11 will be required to take a final exam in every subject. All semester long courses will have a final exam, and all exams will count 20% of the year long grade. Seniors will take exams during their classes before the Senior Trip, and all seniors are expected to be present.

Once these two hurdles have been successfully crossed, we will continue the race to graduation with a host of student academic experiences and events. The calendar is full, and I will continue to add to it as activities are planned.

April 25:         Prom at the Aquarium

April 28, 29:   ACT/Aspire Testing for Grades 9, 10, and 11

May 4-14:       AP Tests

May 15:          AP Picnic, Battle of the Bands, Basketball, and Pep Rally

May 15 -20:   Senior Exams

May 19-21:    EOC Tests (English I, Biology and US History)

May 26:          Awards Assembly for AMHS students

May 28 - 29:  Underclassmen Exams

June 1 - 2:     Underclassmen Exams

May 31:          Baccalaureate

June 3:           Graduation 2:30 PM

Please make a note of all these events. We will keep you posted with details as each activity comes up, but I wanted everyone to have an idea of some of the key events that lie ahead. I encourage you to check the AMHS Website calendar and to call the office if you have a question about any activity.

Thank you for your continued support of our efforts to offer the best possible academic program we can.

Judith Peterson, AMHS Principal

Reminders for Sophomores Registering for English Classes

Dear Sophomore Parents,

Registration for next year is on the horizon. Keep in mind that Junior year is a difficult one - thesis begins and all content classes are more difficult. As you choose your child's AP classes, please keep this in mind. All APs may not be for all children. Doing well in the AP classes taken is more important than taking on too many AP classes. As a teacher of AP English Language and Composition, I would like for you to consider the following in choosing this class for your child. AP Language is for students who read avidly, and are confident in their essay writing. Extra reading is required of them because American Literature is also being covered - summer work will be reading and annotating 5 novels. If your child sees this as a chore, it might not be the right class for him or her. Every year there are students who take the class who are not ready to tackle AP Language so I ask that you carefully consider this decision. If you have questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Thank you,

Carol Hurt

Athens and the Islands...
AMHS Spring Break 2016

Trace the path of Ancient History! Experience the Acropolis, Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon, Santorini, Patmos, Crete, Rhodes, and Ephesus.

We have slightly revised the trip for Spring Break 2016. With consideration for getting the best value for our money without missing too much school, we are offering a 10-day trip to Greece and Turkey.

We offered a trip to Greece a few years ago, and it was a great success, particularly the islands! Please take a look at the itinerary online or send me an email if you would like a hard copy. You can also pick up information in my room or in Mr. McCormick's. If you would like to register for the trip, please go to www.eftours.com, then type in the tour number 1668155KK. The total price is detailed for you on line. You can sign up for the trip with a $95 deposit. When you sign up on line, you can choose to pay the company monthly or pay in full, 90 days before departure.

The earlier you sign up the less the monthly payment! We have also included 2 extra activities in the price - a Greek cooking class and a Greek Evening with food and music.

Please let me know if you have any questions. You can reach me by phone at 746-1300, ex. 26227 or by email at [email protected].

AMHS Teacher And Staff Appreciation Week is April 20-24th

PLEASE NOTE THIS CHANGE FROM LAST NOTICE: TEACHER APPRECIATION LUNCHEON IS TUESDAY, APRIL 21ST (not the 29th!)

AMHS Teacher and STaff Appreciation Week is Aril 20 -24th and we need more help.

Thank you to all who signed up over the past 2 weeks.  We still need more volunteers and donations.

Priority needs:

On Monday, April 20, we will have some signs and banners of appreciation made and hung in the school. Can you assist (making them ahead and/or putting them up)?  Email [email protected].

On Tuesday, April 21st at 1pm (drop off by noon), we will host our now-famous, seated pot-luck luncheon in the cafeteria lobby.  We will have pretty tablecloths (thanks to Laura Alberg), floral arrangements(thanks to Margaret Wannamaker), live student music, and delicious foods from AMHS families.

WE NEED DONATIONS!!   We ask for homemade, or high quality-purchased food items in quantities prepared for 15-20 people (small servings!).  Ideas?  Hearty salads (chicken, tuna, egg, tofu, bean, grain, etc)., Main dishes (meats or fish, veggies)...ethnic or American, desserts, etc. etc....from your favorite take out or made at home.  We will be serving about 65 people.  You can sign up to donate/volunteer on by clicking here to go to Sign Up Genius (you can see what has been donated so far).
OR by emailing me, [email protected].

We need gift cards by Monday, April 13.  For this give-away, we hope that each family can send in one $10 or $20 gift card to a place that they frequent or enjoy...anything from your favorite restaurant, yogurt shop, coffee shop, movie theater, gift shop, etc.  Anything that is FUN for you will be enjoyed by one of our teachers.  You are always welcome to add a little note to the card to say thanks and who the donor is.

Details: Food/donations for the luncheon can be dropped off by students to the downstairs break room, or by parents at the front desk or at the bus loop anytime before noon on the 21st.
Please label dishes to be picked up by students or parents later that day or in the week.

Gift cards should be addressed to "Ms Linnie Duckett for Teacher Appreciation" and dropped off in her office. Looking forward to a great week!
Thank you,
Cammie Camp  [email protected] and the
AMHS Teacher and Staff Appreciation Committee

The Clean Cities Sweep is an upcoming volunteer opportunity for anyone who doesn't mind getting their hands (and feet, clothes, etc.) dirty while enjoying the great outdoors and having a positive impact on the environment:

"Clean Cities Sweep is a series of events hosted by various community, schools, business, and family groups in Charleston and North Charleston. Groups range in size from just 2 people to 100. All groups are given trash bags, gloves, pickup sticks, and other supplies, as available, to help make their project a reality. If groups do not have  a project in mind then Keep Charleston Beautiful helps match them with areas in need of litter cleanups. Projects normally last 2-3 hours depending on what the group chooses to do.

To find out more information, please visit: Keep Charleston Beautiful or Clean Cities Sweep Flyer

Click here to get details about these events and additional opportunities.

If you choose to participate in a community service project, remember to take the Community Service Project form and have the event sponsor sign it for you.

If you know of an opportunity that needs to be added to the list, forward that information  to Becky and John Dornisch

[email protected].

If you are looking for summer programs for your student, please check the Guidance and School Counseling Department page on the AMHS website. We list programs as they come in, so check regularly if you are interested.
