PI Day 2015 Scheduled for March 13
|
It's coming but don't be afraid! Mu Alpha Theta and the AMHS Math Department are sponsoring Pi Day the 13th Celebration on Friday, March 13th during our extended lunch period. Every student at Magnet must do at least one thing for their math class including poems, songs, posters, reciting digits, etc.
All of the specs for this awesome whole-school assignment can be found by clicking here.
How can you be a part of Pi Day? We need donations of items suitable for prizes. For example, iTunes gift cards, any type of gift card, puzzles, games, fun or geeky gifts are welcome. Also, we want your pies. If you'd like to send in a pie or two with your student next week, we sell pies at lunch to the student body. And we would love to have you come and volunteer and help serve pie during our lunch. Contact Ms. Hooffstetter at Gwen_Hooffstetter@charleston.k12.sc.us with questions or to offer your assistance.

The Student Perspective...
by Jennie Schaaf
|
Last week was the AMHS Talent Show, a production that is always well-received for the hard work and talent that goes into pulling it off. It provides a great opportunity for the most artistically talented and creatively minded students to display their particular skills while supportive students and faculty gather to cheer them on. Although there are faculty judges who determine the top performances, many people, including the contestants, are simply happy to listen to music, sing, dance, and laugh, leaving at the end of the evening with many new collective memories.
Some performers return year after year, continuing to amaze with their various talents, while others appeared for the first time last week, surprising everyone with their flairs for music, dance, and comedy. Both sets of the show were equally talented and entertaining, comprised of many individual performers or partners and gravitating toward larger groups and bands at the end of the night. Intermixed with shout outs and jokes from the emcees, the talent show was an exciting event from start to finish and one that will be frequently mentioned in the following weeks.

Athens and the Islands...
AMHS Spring Break 2016
|

Trace the path of Ancient History! Experience the Acropolis, Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon, Santorini, Patmos, Crete, Rhodes, and Ephesus.
We have slightly revised the trip for Spring Break 2016. With consideration for getting the best value for our money without missing too much school, we are offering a 10-day trip to Greece and Turkey.
We offered a trip to Greece a few years ago, and it was a great success, particularly the islands! Please take a look at the itinerary online or send me an email if you would like a hard copy. You can also pick up information in my room or in Mr. McCormick's. If you would like to register for the trip, please go to www.eftours.com, then type in the tour number 1668155KK. The total price is detailed for you on line. You can sign up for the trip with a $95 deposit. When you sign up on line, you can choose to pay the company monthly or pay in full, 90 days before departure.
The earlier you sign up the less the monthly payment! We have also included 2 extra activities in the price - a Greek cooking class and a Greek Evening with food and music.

Reminders for Sophomores Registering for English Classes |
Dear Sophomore Parents,
Registration for next year is on the horizon. Keep in mind that Junior year is a difficult one - thesis begins and all content classes are more difficult. As you choose your child's AP classes, please keep this in mind. All APs may not be for all children. Doing well in the AP classes taken is more important than taking on too many AP classes. As a teacher of AP English Language and Composition, I would like for you to consider the following in choosing this class for your child. AP Language is for students who read avidly, and are confident in their essay writing. Extra reading is required of them because American Literature is also being covered - summer work will be reading and annotating 5 novels. If your child sees this as a chore, it might not be the right class for him or her. Every year there are students who take the class who are not ready to tackle AP Language so I ask that you carefully consider this decision. If you have questions, please feel free to email me at carol_hurt@charleston.k12.sc.us.
Thank you,
Carol Hurt
