PI Day 2015 Scheduled for March 13
|
It's coming but don't be afraid! Mu Alpha Theta and the AMHS Math Department are sponsoring Pi Day the 13th Celebration on Friday, March 13th during our extended lunch period. Every student at Magnet must do at least one thing for their math class including poems, songs, posters, reciting digits, etc.
All of the specs for this awesome whole-school assignment can be found by clicking here.
How can you be a part of Pi Day? We need donations of items suitable for prizes. For example, iTunes gift cards, any type of gift card, puzzles, games, fun or geeky gifts are welcome. Also, we want your pies. If you'd like to send in a pie or two with your student next week, we sell pies at lunch to the student body. And we would love to have you come and volunteer and help serve pie during our lunch. Contact Ms. Hooffstetter at Gwen_Hooffstetter@charleston.k12.sc.uswith questions or to offer your assistance.

Athens and the Islands...
AMHS Spring Break 2016
|

Trace the path of Ancient History! Experience the Acropolis, Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon, Santorini, Patmos, Crete, Rhodes, and Ephesus.
We have slightly revised the trip for Spring Break 2016. With consideration for getting the best value for our money without missing too much school, we are offering a 10-day trip to Greece and Turkey.
We offered a trip to Greece a few years ago, and it was a great success, particularly the islands! Please take a look at the itinerary online or send me an email if you would like a hard copy. You can also pick up information in my room or in Mr. McCormick's. If you would like to register for the trip, please go to www.eftours.com, then type in the tour number 1668155KK. The total price is detailed for you on line. You can sign up for the trip with a $95 deposit. When you sign up on line, you can choose to pay the company monthly or pay in full, 90 days before departure.
The earlier you sign up the less the monthly payment! We have also included 2 extra activities in the price - a Greek cooking class and a Greek Evening with food and music.

A Song for the Un-Sung Heroes of AMHS |
So what song can we hum? Possibly a Country song, perhaps Hip Hop or R&B?
You probably all realize, that so much work goes on "behind closed doors", into the "midnight hour" and "all night long"; and this work is done (sometimes thanklessly) by PARENT VOLUNTEERS.
I just want to say thank you "right here, right now", and to recognize the efforts of just a few of the parents, who I know have worked tirelessly this year to make AMHS into the marvelous place it is.
Cliff Woods, thank you! You created the AM Foundation just two years ago, from nothing! I can't imagine all the hours you spent writing Missions and plans and performing community analysis. You have put together and led a powerful team of parents and you helped Mrs. Peterson realize a goal of long term strategic proportion. Well done!
Dr. Darlene Rawles; ("graduating" your student this year) as the President of the SIC, you have been taxed with a great deal over the year and you have handled it masterfully. Your leadership and selfless service to AMHS students is to be commended. You organized the Health program into something that purposefully challenges our students (as the mother of a Freshman and a Senior, I really thank you for that one!). You made the gutsy choice to challenge the CCSD regarding student interrogation policies, and I know that you plan to continue to work with them to bring about positive change. Thank YOU!
Connie Biggs, you have had a challenging year leading the Booster Club through some difficult waters. It's impressive to see what you have accomplished with the Booster web site and activity calendar! We have 23 teams now (counting JV) with games and meets all over the state. You put in hours of labor to get all the teams, their schedules and (best of all) the DIRECTIONS to the fields and gyms in one concise, easy to follow calendar. You all should see the Spring schedule Connie put together for the 8 Spring teams; visit www.amhsboosterclub.org. Thank you for all that amazing effort!
PIE Board Members, gosh I love you guys! Talk about hours of labor and work...where do I start? Cathy Cocolas (who is "graduating" this year!), putting a Raptor Report together every single week, is no easy task! (I know you won't miss receiving my last minute articles!) You have streamlined the look and put out an outstanding e-paper complete with masthead and pictures and links...it's really astounding, and we ALL appreciate your hard work each week. Thank you!
Cammie Camp (also graduating, after 3 kids and over 10 years on the Board) you have made the teachers and staff at Magnet so happy for so many years. They love the way you organize their "appreciation" lunches, breakfasts and special bags of treats. You have spent countless hours shopping, organizing and delivering, and it's clearly come straight from your heart. Thank you Cammie!
Robyn Bradley (graduating her last of three children and spending 12 years on the Board) you have worn two hats with PIE for many years and your shoes are going to be VERY hard to fill. The wonderful Student Directories that we all use constantly are entirely your work product; the layout and content is meticulously done and the pictures are always fantastic! The students know and love Robyn for INVENTING the A/B Honor Roll Ice Cream Social. This quarterly event is the proverbial "icing on the cake" that makes Magnet special, and it's a great deal of fun to work with her at the tables adding whipped cream and chocolate and (Robyn's homemade) strawberry coulis to the ice cream.
I'm not even close to thanking all the selfless volunteers who have done more than their share this year. But then again, the year is not over, is it?
So parents...this is also a call to action. Please consider how your talents might add to the AMHS community in the coming years. We are making positive changes in the direction and growth of our parent support groups. Drop a line to me at amhspie@gmail.com and I'll be sure to forward your interest to the appropriate leader. Thanks so much for being a part of the Magnet family, have a great weekend!
Christen Hall, AMHS President
