THE RAPTOR REPORT

Thank You for Making Celebrate Magnet Mardi Gras a Success!

The Celebrate Magnet Mardi Gras Auction was fantastic, if you were there, I hope you agree! A big thank you goes to John and Becky Dornisch for all of there work pulling it together.  We are still crunching the numbers and organizing all the fun bidding stories we want to share.  Look for lots more in next week's Raptor Report! For a complete list of sponsors click here.

A very wonderful teacher  (Ms. Desbrow) lost a sentimental party mask at the event. We would love your help in trying to get this mask returned to her.

She had placed it in the coat room, If anyone mistakenly picked up this mask could you please contact either myself, Ms Desbrow or make other arrangements to get the mask returned to her.

The Student Perspective...

by Jennie Schaaf

This past week was also the week of Coming Home, a winter spirit week leading up to the Coming Home basketball games on Friday. Monday was Charleston Day, which the seniors broadly interpreted when they dressed up as Charleston Bridge Run runners and the Ravenel Bridge itself. On twin day, two grades, the seniors and the sophomores, chose to be twins as a class, dressing for Mardi Gras and as farmers respectively. Mathlete vs. Athlete day on Wednesday meant that the whole wide world of sports was represented, with the seniors once again choosing a class theme and dressing as ping pong players, complete with spontaneous ping pong matches in the cafeteria at lunch. AMHS temporarily transformed into Hogwarts for Harry Potter Day on Thursday and, although the traditional quidditch tournament was canceled at lunch, the grades still enjoyed dressing as their respective houses, with some students choosing to portray specific characters from the series.

After some minor complications with the wall decorations Thursday evening, everything miraculously pulled together for Friday as is always the case. The freshman theme this winter was farmers, sophomores decorated for Avatar, the juniors made a last minute decision to wear pajamas for a sleepover and the seniors once again chose an intimidating theme- Vikings. At the pep rally, Mr. and Ms. Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior were announced as well as Mr. and Ms. Magnet from the senior class, something different from the fall pep rally. Winter sports were given recognition with senior basketball players receiving extra recognition at their games later that evening. Although we lost to BE at home, we all came to the game determined to cheer for everyone leaving their hearts on the court and left as a united school, feeling that we had definitely won in spirit and support.

Ecology Club works to Keep Adopted Road Cleaned Up

On Saturday members of the AMHS Ecology Club (and the Roop family) cleaned the stretch of 17 North that we adopted at the beginning of the year. In all, 2 bags of trash and 3 bags of recyclables were collected.

If you care about the environment, please join us A-day Mondays at lunch in room 7224.  We do more than clean!

AMHS Spring Break 2016

Trace the path of Ancient History! Experience the Acropolis, Delphi, the Temple of Poseidon, Santorini, Patmos, Crete, Rhodes, and Ephesus.

We have slightly revised the trip for Spring Break 2016. With consideration for getting the best value for our money without missing too much school, we are offering a 10-day trip to Greece and Turkey.

We offered a trip to Greece a few years ago, and it was a great success, particularly the islands! Please take a look at the itinerary online or send me an email if you would like a hard copy. You can also pick up information in my room or in Mr. McCormick's. If you would like to register for the trip, please go to www.eftours.com, then type in the tour number 1668155KK. The total price is detailed for you on line. You can sign up for the trip with a $95 deposit. When you sign up on line, you can choose to pay the company monthly or pay in full, 90 days before departure.

The earlier you sign up the less the monthly payment! We have also included 2 extra activities in the price-a Greek cooking class and a Greek Evening with food and music.

Please let me know if you have any questions. You can reach me by phone at 746-1300, ex. 26227 or by email at Mary_Altman@charleston.k12.sc.us.
