THE RAPTOR REPORT
Principal Points: Thanksgiving Thoughts

Happy Thanksgiving!

Academic Magnet High School epitomizes the spirit of the holiday season with generous support of key activities including Low Country Food Bank, Operation Christmas Child, and Families Helping Families. AMHS students, faculty and parents have accepted the challenge that "to whom much is given, much is expected," and as a community we have exceeded our goals to assist others and to honor the spirit of the season.

Thank you, students, parents, teachers and supporters. We wish you all a very special holiday and the joy of family and friends.

Great News for AMHS:

  • Two present AMHS teachers and one former AMHS teacher have earned National Board Teacher Certification. Congratulations to Maria Kelly, Maria Desbrow and Paul Aburrow! With Ms. Kelly and Ms. Desbrow joining the ranks of NBCT, "Magnet" now has 19 National Board Certified Teachers.
  • Both CCSD and AMHS have earned a rating of Excellent on the state report card. This is a major accomplishment for our District and reflects its focus on academic excellence for all students. AMHS continues to excel in its programs and student accomplishments, and we are proud of our teachers and students as they work together to achieve at the highest academic level. To access the AMHS Report card, click here; to view the CCSD report card, click here.

As always, thank you for your continuing support as AMHS moves ahead into the season of college applications, thesis presentations, and additional holiday activities. If we can help with anything, please call us at 746-1300.

Students Present Thesis Work at MUSC Research Day
Three AMHS Seniors, Diedra Ward, Sashank Sakamuri, and Vaibhav Mohanty, recently  presented posters of their thesis work at MUSC Research Day.

Each of them presented to and were evaluated by three judges.

All three of them were in the undergraduate category, thus competing against college students. Vaibhav won second place for his presentation.

Booster Club Update
Dear Magnet Family:

I have discussed the booster club website, www.amhsboosterclub.org, many times this year, but for those of you that haven't had time to check it out I want to share a few details. The schedules for the winter sports are on the calendar, so please try to attend some of the games and matches. The booster club board members are; President Connie Biggs, Vice-President Donna Rose, Secretary Leslie Mitchum, Treasurer Miki Waring, Coach Representative Gwen Hooffstetter, Members-at-Large Francie Reding and Toni Roerden. The majority of the board members are serving their first year.

The board members and a handful of volunteers have:

  • Held two Tailgate Parties

  • Worked the concessions stand at football games

  • Raised funds selling spirit items: Raptor stadium chairs, pom-poms and stadium cups.

Thanks to membership dues, proceeds from the concessions, and fundraising, so far this year we have:

  • Provided 5 picnic tables located at the tennis courts; joint funding effort between Lowes of Mount Pleasant and the booster club

  • Paid for tournament entry fees for Girls Golf, Girls and Boys Cross Country, Girls Basketball, and Girls Soccer.

  • Purchased a timing watch for Cross Country

  • Provided joint funding for new Football jerseys

The first home basketball games will be on December 2nd . We need volunteers to work the concession stand during all of the home games. The concession stand will be open for all four games, 4pm to 9:30pm.  Please click here to sign up!

We are hoping to have an oyster roast on March 28th. We need volunteers to make this happen. Please contact us at [email protected] or Francie Reding at 843-324-9084.

I encourage all of you that have a child that plays on a sport or club team, to join and/or help the booster club. Help can come in many forms: donations, volunteering your time, and sharing your ideas.

Go Raptors!

PIE Update

I am THANKFUL FOR:  an AMAZING PIE BOARD OF LEADERS, a terrific school for my children to attend, my family and steadfast friends.

PIE recently supported a "thank you" for our wonderful teachers and staff. They received a well deserved "Pumpkin Tea" to begin this season of celebrations. Gratitude goes to Cammie Camp, who has led our Teacher Appreciation Committee for many years. And thank you to all who sent in goodies and/or Grocery Cards to give as gifts to our fantastic Magnet staff. We are so lucky to have them, and they really appreciate our support as well!

Congratulations to all the students and families who have participated in athletic and academic State final events and playoffs. You made our school proud. Go Raptors! You all continue to be a force of good on the field, in the community and in the classroom.

PIE's Celebrate Magnet Committee, chaired by Becky Dornisch  is actively planning a Mardi Gras party, February 7, 2015, that you will NOT WANT TO MISS! Becky is currently seeking fun loving volunteers to coordinate the festivities. PIE is looking for financial help from everyone who can donate money or time to help us meet our obligations to AMHS.

PIE and our Guidance Department have set the date for a seminar on College Financial Aid...January 8th; 6 to 8 pm.  Details to come later.

At our next PIE meeting we will hear from our Media Specialist, Mrs. Susan Henley about the Ya'll Fest, and how PIE can continue to support the literacy program at AMHS for the English and Spanish language departments.  Mr. Phillips has reported terrific progress on the 3 D Printers that his Computer students have been assembling. We are glad to have the means to be able to support such exciting programs for our students!

SIC has continued their quest for answers from the CCSD.  Look for the progress of this ongoing effort, in the next Raptor.

Thank YOU Raptor community, for continuing to support Magnet, in any and every way that you choose. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Christen Hall, PIE President

Magnet's Key Club Raises Money for IBD Research

Several students from AMHS recently participated in our Charleston Take Steps Walk on November 2, 2014, and raised funds to help further CCFA's mission. Alec Robinovitz, our 2014 Honored Hero and top individual fundraiser, raised over $2,600, while rallying his fellow Key Club members to take action. This memorable day of celebration would not have been possible without the Key Club's participation and enthusiasm for Take Steps.

More than 200 participants attended the event, which raised over $26,000. AMHS students were an integral part of the Charleston Take Steps Walk's success. We appreciate your school's financial support which enables us to raise awareness and increase mission critical funds supporting IBD research.

In particular, I would like to thank the following students who went above and beyond as volunteers by helping with set-up and clean-up: Noa HaLevi, William Pitts and Erin Schmell. Also kudos to Key Club advisor, Tyson McCormick, for spearheading student involvement.

Please see attached for a photo with members of the Key Club at the event, and feel free to feature this in any school publications or announcements to highlight their service to the community.

If individuals affiliated with AMHS would still like to make a contribution on behalf of the Key Club and Alec, they can donate by clicking here.

Thank you again for your support of Charleston Take Steps, and I look forward to continuing our strong community partnership for the 2015 walk.

Sincerely,

Gretchen Cundiff, Take Steps Charleston Walk Manager for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).
