PIE Annual Fundraiser Date Set
|
Dear Parents and Friends of AMHS:
February 7, 2015, mark your calendars!
It's time to celebrate Academic Magnet, "Mardi Gras" style.
Partners in Education's (PIE) Annual Fundraiser will celebrate a night of "Mardi Gras" fun with friends at the Blackbaud Atrium to raise funds for one of the top ranked public high schools in the nation.
Our goal this year is $50,000 and we will need your help to reach this goal. All funds raised go directly to the school for the support of:
-
Professional teacher development and training
-
Student recognition for making the Honor Roll
-
Salaries for administrative support staff
-
Essential classroom supplies
-
Teacher appreciation
-
Honoraria for speakers
-
Classroom "wish lists" to enhance curriculum
-
Student scholarship fund
The following chart illustrates the breakdown of how PIE supports the school and its many vital programs. Without our annual fundraiser and the reaching our goal of $50,000 many of the items for teachers, students and the salaries for administrative support staff would not be possible.
So how can you help? We ask that you, your company or employer be a sponsor for this event and/or donate silent auction items. There are many sponsor options available, from a $250 Owl sponsorship up to a $5,000 Raptor sponsorship! Each sponsorship level provides special benefits. And, new this year, businesses that become a sponsor of the event this year, will have their company's name advertised in the yearbook, a link to your business website on the Raptor Report, and your company information placed within the PIE Directory for 2015-16. A business sponsorship is a wonderful way of advertising within the AMHS community effectively as well as a fantastic way to support PIE's important mission and our school.
We are also looking for businesses that can donate an item for our silent auction. This year, we will have themed baskets such as "Pamper Me" (think spa package) or "Tourist in your own town" basket (think hotel stay and a fine restaurant certificate). The themed basket possibilities are endless. We need your help to ask merchants where you shop, eat and play to donate merchandise and/or a gift certificate. For a very special item, if you own a vacation home or have a contact that can arrange an exciting adventure, we would love to have those items as well.
The PIE auction committee is in need of more volunteers to help with the event, some areas of help include: silent auction organization, decorating, communication and invitations. More specific information will follow next week in the Raptor Report from our PIE President, Christen Hall. I wanted to alert you now to save February 7th on your calendar, consider becoming a sponsor and help us begin gathering our fabulous auction items. I can guarantee this will be a fantastic night of "Mardi Gras" fun with our AMHS family.
Please contact me, Becky Dornisch, PIE Auction Chair at amhsauction@dornisch.org or our PIE President, Christen Hall at amhspie@gmail.com if you would like to sign up immediately for a sponsorship, volunteer, or have an auction item to donate.
We can be successful and reach our goal of $50,000 only with your help. Please consider helping today!

Sign up to be a Senior Thesis Mentor
|
Dear Parents and Friends of the Academic Magnet High School (AMHS),
The students of AMHS actively engage in academic pursuits both in and out of the classroom. Many students eagerly participate in academic competitions, including science fairs and robotics' competitions, and all seniors must complete the senior thesis, the capstone of the AMHS academic experience. As the school has grown and matured, the challenge to fulfill students' needs for academic and thesis mentors has become more and more difficult. The School Improvement Council (SIC) has been working with several senior thesis advisors to create a database of individuals who could possibly serve as mentors or could assist in identifying mentors in a particular area of study. We are pleased to report that this database is now available for use by the academic advisors, and the advisors will be able to search for potential mentors by field/area of expertise and key word. We would like to enhance this database by including information from current parents and AMHS supporters.
Please consider adding your name to the Senior Thesis Resource Database by providing a small amount of information through the survey linked below. The survey will prompt you to share your name, contact information, company name, position, occupation/field of expertise and keywords (an example of keywords would be that a lawyer specializing in constitutional law may choose constitution and law as keywords). You do not have to complete all of the fields. If you are not be able to serve as a mentor but may be able to help advisors identify mentors, please also complete the survey. If you completed the survey about two years ago, we would like to ask that you resubmit your information through the current survey.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HRFD2LN
Please contact us if you have questions about the database. Thank you for your time!
Best regards,
Holly Mitchell (jmitchell172@comcast.net),

ONCE A YEAR, we ask you - our AMHS Community - to help the Academic Magnet Foundation LeverageSuccess for AMHS.
With weeks to go, we are halfway towards this year's goals of 75% participation from within our school community. Your support helps define our own, internal commitment to AMHS when the Foundation seeks funding from businesses and other outside sources.
THANK YOU to the 52% of you who took part last year - and to the many who already donated for 2014: Click here to see a complete list.
The Foundation works with AMHS faculty, leadership, and groups to highlight long-term academic needs - and provide long-term funding to fulfill those needs.
Last year - your new Foundation's first-year - our accomplishments included:
-
Chinese language - adding an entirely new, college-level language program to the AMHS curriculum, with a minimum 3-year funding commitment;
-
Summer Scholars Institute - adding a 4-day academic/orientation program for all AMHS freshman - created by AMHS faculty, directed by Ms. Tonya McIntyre & Principal Peterson. Here too, we made a minimum 3-year funding commitment - partnering with PIE the first year; seeking corporate sponsorships for ongoing funding.
-
Establishing bylaws, good governance & achieving IRS determination of 501c3 ("tax deductible") status.
-
Creating online portals for community & alumni outreach:
-
Surpassing fundraising goals - over 52% participation in our 1st year.
-
Establishing the AMHS School Needs Committee to define investment needs under the direction of AMHS faculty & Principal Peterson (and with counsel from SIC & PIE).
2014 investments are focused on "STEAM" & professional development programs - and we aim to create more diverse & greater funding for AMHS.
TAKE PART TODAY! Get involved. Volunteer! Click here to DONATE.

Magnet Students Lob into 3rd Place at USC Engineering Contest
|
The Rock Lobsters, Thomas Bennett, Ian Ouellette, and Sam Menkus, represented Academic Magnet at the Pumpkin Chunkin' competition sponsored by USC's engineering fraternity, Theta Tau, in Columbia this past weekend. They lobbed themselves into a Third Place ranking and earned a $100 dollar prize. These guys impressed fellow competitors and judges with their innovative design. Third Place isn't bad for a first try. Stay tuned. The Rock Lobsters will be taking their show to the Storm the Citadel competition in February.
